While journeying across the desert
Mrs. A. Goodrleli-I’reer, author of "In
a Syrian Saddle,” met a lonely travel
er hound for Medeba. On hearing that
the caravan was bound for the same
place he asked permission to Join
them. Incidentally he furnished an
Illustration of the difference between
necessities and luxuries.
We were very grateful, says the
1 writer, for coffee and an excellent
lunch of sausage, potted meat and
jam. with white bread, brought from
Jerusalem. We ale our dainties with
some sense of guilt, as the newcomer
produced his lunch of dates and ligs.
i Dates and ligs, he informed us, were

sufficing to the body, stimulating to
the mind. The wheat, the flesh, above
all the alcohol of civilization, were

French proverb, and it serves to dis
tinguisb a stroke as decisive as un

years later Jarnac was a captain in
the defense of St. Quentin. Eventual

ships would probably have sufficient
advantage in speed for the admiral to
maintain his four vessels abreast of
the first four of the enemy’s ships, and
in this ease an eight gun ship would
be opposed to a four gun ship, with
the inevitable result that the four
smaller ships would lie silenced.

Water Without Stopping.
The Lake Shore railroad has finished
spending more than SlMlO.OOO to ena
ble all its trains to take water while
running. The line is the first in the
country to be entirely equipped this
way. Henceforth neither freight nor
passenger trains will need to stop or
slow down for water. On a few other
roads using such appliances only a few
passenger trains are provided for.
This extensive improvement by the
Lake Shore marks the passing of the
old fashioned water tank. It is be
lieved that all other large railroad j
systems will adopt similar regulations i
iu order to save time and wear and |
tear on equipment. This Vanderbilt j
line now lias eleven places between
Chicago and Buffalo at which water j
supply is scooped up by passenger
trains going forty to seventy-five miles
an hour and by freights going twenty- ;
five to thirty-five miles an hour.
Every fifty miles troughs have been
built. They are 2,000 feet long. At
each nlace of this kind the road has
spent over $100,000. Besides, all en
gines have had to be adjusted to the 1

er recently under repair at Portsmouth,
England. It became necessary to make

to melt the hole by using the electric-

known, attracted many curious spec
tators, from the captain down to the

the operation was either half blinded
or horribly burned. The officer wh<»
