Convention to be Held in Star Thea
tre Next Month. |
During the last twenty or thirty
years, in every civilized country of
the world, the love for, and interest
taken in the divine art. Music, has
been universal.
Especially does this apply to the
King of all instilments—The Violin.
Performers of this noble instru
ment may he divided into two classes
—Die trained musician, and the mere
lover of music. In the case of the
former we have the man. who in nn-
dltion to great natural talents, t a lies
liis art seriously, and maybe hopes by
deep study and perseverance, to mas
ter the ureat technical difficulties of
the instrument, and so possibl- make
a name for himself in the great world
of music. But it is with the mere
lover of the violin—the amateur—we
are principally concerned; the man
the great possibilities of the instru
ment when in the hands of a skillful
performer.
This is decidedly a distinct innova
tion. the presenting to the public the
two classes of violin playing and Mr.
Richardson in appearing in the role
of modern violin technic versus old-
time fiddling is cognizant of the open
criticism of the classical musicians,
not only in his native State but ad
joining States.
A prize of $10 in gold will be
awarded by five prominent citizens of
each town, to the best first fiddler
and $5 to the best second fiddler.
Application for entrance should be
made to Ed. H. DeCamp, Gaffney,
S. C.
No entrance fee will be required,
and the fiddlers who come to Gaffney
and enter the contest will be enter
tained free of all cost. Prof. Richard
son will hold his convention in Gaff
ney on February 24th and 25th, and

MR. DON RICHARDSON.
who possibly not knowing a single
note of music, passes many happy
hours with his old fiddle, playing the
old country folk-songs and tunes in
the bosom of, his own family.
In almost every land are to be
found these old lovers of their fiddles.
In the far villages of England, amongst
the hills and dales of ‘‘Bonnie Scot
land” and in the famous Black For
est of Germany may be found dozens
of them. It is the same in our land,
especially our Southland. In the vil
lages and hamlets of the Carolinas,
of Georga, Alabama, Tennessee and
Mississippi are many men, who, when
their days work is over take down
from its hanging place against the
wall their old fiddle and pass an idle
hour playing the old songs, jigs, reels,
ets., we all love so well.
At the request of many friends,
and believers that there are many
people in our Southland who would
be pleased to hear the old-time tunes
played by real old-time players. Mr.
Don Richardson, the well known mu
sician and famous violinist of Char
lotte. N. C.. is undertaking a short
tour of the South, in order to give the
people of the Southern States an op
portunity of hearing the tunes their
forefathers played in the lonv ago.
Mr. Richardson has been fo-tunate
in securing the interest in his under
taking of many well known men of
the South noted for their love of the
violin, and many of them have pro
mised to appear personally with him;
and demonstrate that their hands
have not yet lost their old-time cun
ning.
A special feature of this unique af
fair will be the contrasting of the
old method of playing, with it’s limit-'
efi technique, and the modem style,
with it’s bounding possibilities.
Mr. Richardson will himself appear,
and by his rendering of works by
modem composers, will demonstrate
will bring with him several old-time
fiddlers, but only fiddlers of Cherokee
county will be eligible for the con
test.
