A Peep Inside the Recent Panic's Se
cret Conference?
Those midnight conferences in Mr.
Morgan's library, with the prosperity
of the entire country at stake, possess
more dramatic Interest than any other
feature of the period of fear. Car
riages and automobiles brought the
best known llgures in the financial
world to his door; reporters lined the
sidewalks, aecosting each man as he
entered the building in the effort to
gather Information as to what was to
be done to relieve the situation. Anx
ious citizens who ordinarily would
long before have been in bed stood
listlessly about, arousing themselves
to a show of interest whenever some
new arrival appeared or when some
man quietly left the conference.
When the runs or the Trust Com
pany of America and the Lincoln
Trust company, far from abating,
seemed to grow more determined each
day. it became apparent that radical
steps would lie necessary to save the
trust company situation. Mr. Morgan
called the leading trust company men
to his library to discuss means of
achieving this end. It was late in the
night before the meeting began. Mr.
Morgan strolled in. lighted a cigar and
appeared to be listening with the
deepest interest to the excited and per
haps incoherent plans of the officers—
plans for solving the riddle without
money. His cigar finished, Mr. Mor
gan impassively lighted a fresh one
and .after three thoughtful puffs plac
ed It with great care between his fin
gers. rested his hand on his knee,
closed his eyes and dropped off to
sleep. Twenty minutes later he arous
ed himself, relighted his cigar and
leaned forward.
“Gentlemen.” he said, "what you
have said has interested me greatly.
But it is no longer the time to talk
about what you would like tc do. It
is the time to talk about what you
must do. \Ye need §10,000,000, and
you must raise it. Mr. , what will
you put down?”
He handed a slip of paper to the
. an nearest him, ami after a few mo
ments of painful consideration this
man put down a figure, passing the
slip on to his nearest neighbor. When
all hud put down their figures Mr.
Morgan studied the record with much
interest, totaling up the column.
“Gentlemen, wi are still $7,500,000
short. Come. Mr. , will you sub
scribe a million?”
Mr. — was visibly embarrassed,
finally confessing that his powers did
not go so high. He would have to con
sult with Mr. .
“Where is Mr. ?” asked Mr. Mor
gan. “Is ue at his house?”
The man nodded, and Mr. Morgan
rang a bell, instructing the man who
answered it to call up th • financier and
saydhat In* desired his presence Imme
diately. When he had arrived and
the reason for the request had been
explained In* said:
“It isn’t a question of whether or not
we can do it. We’ve got to do it.”
The ottiers fell in line, the money
was immediately subscribed, and the
trust company situation was relieved.—

This Kiugiilar name Is given by the
inventor, Eduardo Torres y Quevedo, a
Spaniard, to ao apparatus intended to
take the place of stenography in re
porting speeches. The apparatus,
which consists simply of a series of
little bells, requires the co-operation
of eight or ten writers. Each writer
takes a single phrase from the speak
er's mouth. At the tinkle of a bell on
his left he begins to write what he
hears. The bell on bis right arrests
him and sets his neighbor at .work.
By the time the circuit is made the
first writer is ready for another phrase.
Afterward the phrases, which are num

united to form the entire report Tried
