Spartanbura Concern prospering.
Spartanburg, Jan. 18.—At the annu
al meeting of the directors of the
Farmers’ Fertilizer Company today a
dividend of 10 per oent was declared.
The company has been In operation
about a year and a half, and the finan
cial showing wag most gratifying to
the directors of the company.
Qratfuation Recital.
On last Friday night one of the
largest and most brilliant audiences
of the season assembled at Lime
stone College to hear Miss Loulle
Potter in her graduation piano re
cital. The stage was beautifully de
corated with palms and ferns.
Promptly at half-past eight Miss Pot
ter entered, receiving much applause.
Her first number was a Bach prelude,
followed by pieces by Massanet and
Mokrejs. At the conclusion of this
group Miss Potter was presented with
two magnificent boquets of roses and
carnations, and with some gifts from
friends and societies of which she is
a member. Miss Dew then played the
Soiree do Vienne by Schuhert-Llszt,
which received merited applause.
This number was followed by one of
the most interesting of the sonatas
by Mozart, played by Miss Potter, at
the close of which she was again
presented with flowers and gifts. One
of Schubert’s Impromptus was then
heard, played by Miss Churchill, and
wag well received. Miss Potter then
played two of the most popular con
cert numbers which are often seen
on programs—the valse from Faust
and the Moszkomski E major valse.
These two numbers made a splendid
impression, and they were indeed
splendidly played Technical difficul
ties did not seeni to exist as Miss
Potter played them. Mr. Loring then
played “Polka de Concert’’ by Bart
lett. We have heard this composition
played many times and in many ways,
but it toob on new life as Mr. Loring
played it. We have seldom heard
more applause at any concert in Gaff
ney than was accorded Mr. Loring at
the end of this number. The audience
clamored for an encoure, hoping he
would repeat the same piece, hut af
ter bowing his acknowledgements
three times in response to the con
tinued applause, the programme con
cluded with Miss Potter’s rendition
of El Dorado, also written by Bart
lett.
Altogether it was one of the most
enjoyable concerts we have heard at
Limestone College, and Miss Potter
is to he congratulated upon her suc
cess.

A Point of interest.
(Harper s Weekly.)
In a certain county of Arkar sas a
man named Walters was put o i trial
for stealing a watch. The e 1 idence
had been very conflicting, and as the
jury retired the judge rf marked
suavely that if he could afford any as
sistance in the way of smoof ng out
possible difficulties he should he most
happy to do so. Eleven of th ! jurors
had filed out of the box, but the
twelfth remained, and there was on
his countenance an expression indicat
ing great perplexity.
“Is there any question you’d like
to ask me before you retire?” asked
his honor, observing the juror’s hesi
tancy.
The man’s face brightened. “Yes,
your honor,” he replied eagerly. “I’d
like to know, your honor, whether the
prisoner really stole the watch.”
