Fine Showing of a charlotte Building
and Loan Association.
The following article was taken
from one of the Charlotte papers, and
shows the mighty potentialities of
building and loan associations. These
Institutions have done more for Char
lotte than any other enterprise with
in her environment, and what they
have accomplished in Charlotte may
he accomplished In Gaffney If the
people would only realize their Im
portance.
The article is as follows:
Next Tuesday the Mechanics’ Per
petual Ihiil(lln K and lioan Association
of Charlotte will pay to Its sharehold
ers the sum of $78,000. more than
half of which Is due on the maturity
of the 08th series. This series will
mature next Saturday and the officers
of the association Intend to have ev
erything in shape so that they can
make their payments to sharehold
ers by the following Tuesday. The
exact distribution is as follows: Ma
tured shares, $45,000; cancellation of
mortgages, $33,000; making the total
of $78,000.
Altogether creditable is the show
ing made by this association in the
amount of loans negotiated during
the past four months. Despite the
fact that every avenue for borrowing
money was practically closed on ac
count of the financial stringency, this
association loaned a total of $123,000
within that period.
The twenty-fifth anniversary of the
organization of this institution will
he celebrated in March. During Its
history it has come to be recognized
as one of the leading building and
loan associations in the country.
The fifty-first series will begin with
this association March 7th, books for
which will be opened Monday, Feb
ruary 7th.
At the Sta r Theatre.
“A Queston of Husbands” s a story
of a young wife who is immersed in
the wine of life, and a middle aged
husband who finds most of his pleas
ure about his home. She wants to
go out; he wants to stay in. A con
venient cousin of the husband has
come to act as escort to the wife and
^Jn time they believe they are in love.
Cypreienne, the wife, being played
by Miss Florence Davis this season,
makes up her mind a divorce is the
only reasonable solution of the prob
lem that confronts her. The chamber
of deputies has under advisement a
new law governing divorce. The.
lover thinks to play a trick on her
and get her to his lodgings and to
that end he forges a telegram an
nouncing that the bill has passed.
The telegram falls into the hands of
the husband, played by Elliott Dexter,
and he decides on a bold move to re
tain his wife. He spreads the false
report and pretends to Cypreienne
that nothing in years has pleased him
more than the prospect of release
from his matrimonial bond.
When she learns that nothing sep
arates her from her lover, Cypreien-
ne’s love for him begins immediately
to cool. Her husband’s attitude
piques her and she begs him to take
her with him to supper. He finally
consents j&nd she breaks an engage
ment with the lover. The supper
shows Cyprienne where her affect
ions are really placed and when the
lover traces he r to the cafe she eludes
him and elopes with her husband.
Miss Davis with Elliott Dexter will
appear for one night at the Star Thea
tre next Friday night.
Contestants will apply at the Home Office at once
for information that will be to their advantage.

Child Seriously Burned.
Yesterday morning about 9 o’clock,
Byars, the little three-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Harvey, while
playing in the fire at his home had
tie misfortune to have his dress
catch on fire. Before aid could reach
him the little fellow was almost en
veloped In flames. The dress was
burned almost entirely off and the
body, arms and face of the child were
badly burned. Mrs. Harvey hastened
to the aid of the child and heroically
extinguished the flames, but In do
ing so sustained severe burns about
the hands herself. Dr. Pittman, who
attended the little sufferer, announc
ed that the injuries would not prove
fatal unless the child had swallowed
some of the flames. At last accounts
the child was resting as well as could
be expected.
