We are sorry to hear that consider
able damage and logs has been sus
tained recently at Gaston Shoals by
reason of the high water that has
prevailed. In addition to the loss
entailed It will result in serious de
lay to the completion of the work,
and will be a serious inconvenience
to those who hoped to utilize the
power.

The people of Raleigh, N. C., did
themselves proud In voting the dis
pensary out of that city on December
26th. It will not be long before the
people who were in favor of the
measure, will acknowledge that the
city is a great deal better off with
out the nefarious institution than
with it. At least this has been the
experience of our own town ana we
are satisfied that it wil be the same
way in Raleigh.

Limestone Lodge K. of P. at its
last meeting donated twenty dollars
out of the funds of the order to the
relief of certain destitute families in
the city, and the members present
contributed twelve or fifteen dollars
out of their pockets. A committee
was appointed to disburse this
amount and on the day before Christ
mas the committee laid out the sum
for the benefit of three destitute but
deserving families of the city. The
money was well spent and brought
Joy and gladness to at least fifteen
children and relieved the apprehen
sions of their anxious parents.

This issue of The Ledger closes
our labors for the year 1907. A large
number of our subscribers have taken
advantage of the opportunity to have
their subscription extended while
they could do so for $1.00. Quite a
number of these did so whose sub
scriptions had several months yet to
run. One far-seeing subscriber paid
us for three years. After today the
price of the paper for one year will
be $1.50, for six months it will be
seventy-five cents and for three
months forty cents. As was Stated

An Addi
Editor The Ledger:
Permit us through the columns of
your paper to call the attention of
our people to a movement to mem
orialize the General Assembly of our
State at the approaching session for
relief from the liquor dispensary sys
tem on the lines indicated in the
petitions which are now being pre
sented throughout the city for signa
tures reading as follows:
'To the honorable, the senators
and representatives, the General As
sembly of the State of South Caro
lina In regular session for the year
1908: The humble petition of the
undersigned respectfully shows:
•‘That the dispensary system for
the sale of liquor in the county of
Charleston, in said State, in which
your petitioners reside, is not desired
by a large majority of the voters and
residents of said county, as your peti
tioners verily believe.
That the same is not suited to the
needs, circumstances and conditions
of the people mostly affected thereby.
“That for these reasons the said
system is not supported by public
sentiment, difficult to enforce and not
calculated to demand observance or
respect.
“That your petitioners numbly pray
that such legislation may be enacted
as shall restore the license system to
this community which was of force
at the time of the original enactment
of the State dispensary law in the
year 1892 with the modification re
quired by the State constitution of
1895; and your petitioners fool as
sured that thereby will be secured
not only all the benefits that could
possibly be expected from the dis
pensary system now in force, but the
same would operate also for the well
being and upbuilding of ou’* people.’’
At recent conferences in which a
goodly number of our people parti
cipated the undersigned were ap
pointed a committee to look after the
matter of giving the people an oppor
tunity to sign the petition and then
to present the same to the General
Assembly through the proper chan
nels.
Firmly believing that a large ma
jority of the people of Charleston
will be in sympathy with this move
ment we approach the performance
of our duty with confidence.
Our confidence is strong oecause
In principle our people are at heart
opposed to the liquor dispensary sys
tem. In their opposition thereto they 1
have had ready and intelligent public
support from the Charleston news
papers for the past fifteen years.
It is further strenghtened because
we can refer to a law-abiding and
law-respecting condition which ob
tained here for many, many years be-

The people of Gaffney regret very
much that our sister county of Union
showed by hei vote that a majority
of the people of that county are In
favor of the dispensary. If the peo
ple of Union knew how much better
off this county is without the dispen
sary we are satisfied that they would
have voted overwhelmingly the other
way. It is claimed by numbers of
people that prohibition does not pro
hibit. That is In a sense perhapa
true, but no man who knows what
be is talking about will fail to admit
that prohibition lessens the sale of
whiskey, and where a community is
against the sale of whiskey as is the
case In Gaffney, It comes so near pro
hibition that there is very little cause
for complaint, and we believe that
where such a condition exists that
It will not be long until prohibition
will prohibit in the strictest sense of
the word.
