Drs. Steedly. Pitman and Griffith
performed a successful operation on
T. W. Kirby for appendicitis Satur
day morning. If no complications en
sue the patient will be able to return
to his duties in a short time.
There wag a large crowd of Chris-
raas shoppers in the city Saturday
and they spent a lot of money. It
shows that in spite of the financial
stringency, there Is a lot of money
among the farmers of the county.
Mr. D. L. Splawn, overseer of spin
ning at the Limestone Mills, killed a
hog Friday morning which tipped the
scales at 610 pounas. This was the
net weight of the mammoth porker.
It wa s weighed by Jeff Sparks and
what he says may be relied upon.
Mr. Splawn obtained 200 pounds of
lard from this hog.
There was a double wedding at
the home of Mr. Burgess, In "Fair-
view,” this city, on Thursday night,
December 19th. Mr. S. J. Whelcael
and Miss Sue Lore and Mr. Bob
Grubbe and Miss Mary Love were
the happy young people. The cere
mony was performed by the Rev. R.
E. Johnson.
Preston Wood. Clarence Parris and
James A. Harris, were working on a
house on Mr. Harris’ farm Wednes
day afternoon when the scaffolding
fell, throwing all three to the ground.
Mr. Harris and Parris escaped with
slight bruises, but Preston’s right an
kle bone was dislocated. Drs. Steedly
and Pitman set the injured member,
and Preston Is doing nicely now, al
though will be confined to his home
for a mouth or more.
A young man named Cash, who
lives about eleven miles from Gaff
ney, In the Butler neighborhood, had
the misfortune to get his hand caught
in a gin Friday afternoon about 2
o’clock. He was brought to Gaffney
where he arrived about five o’clock
and Dr. J. N. Nesbitt dressed the
wounds. The hand was severely
lacerated and the doctor amputated
one finger and thought that another
one would have to come off.

school will both be added to the
graded schools on the first of the

The addition of the business course
to the Central school will add great-
lv to Itg usefulness. The night school
will also prove of incalculable Talus,
as certain people who ere now de
prived of receiving Instructions will
be In a position to do so.
Sheriff Thomas reclved information
Thursday night that a distillery was
in operation within about four miles
of King’s Creek station on the South
ern Railway. Accompanied fr? Chief
of Police Duncan, of Blacksburg, he
repaired to the scene of the alleged
Illicit operations and found a still of
about eighty gallons capacity, and be
tween 600 and a thousand gallons of
beer. The fires had been drawn, but
the still wag still hot and showed that
the operators had only recently left
the scene. The capture of this plant
Is Important as it has for a long time
furnished whiskey for the boys and
young men of the neighborhood.
S. J. Lipscomb, a respectable color-
I ed farmer prosecuted Mrs. Josephine
i Robinson and a young woman who
lives with her named Dee Morgan,
for stealing cotton from a small
' house, on December 16th on a place
; which he has rented for this year.

Magistrate Bridges that they saw
Mrs. Robinson and the Morgan girl
In the house. Upon Investigation
they found a sheet on the floor filled
with cotton. Lipscomb’s wife testifi
ed that the sheet belonged to Mrs.
Robinson. The magistrate hound
them over to court for trial at the
next term.

burg Friday night to attend the cere
monial and annual banquet of Altalr
Temple No. 102. Twenty three tyros
were taken across the burning sands
of the desert. Officers were elected
for the ensuing year, all of the old
officers being re-e »ctad except Royal

| S. J. Nichols was elected to fill the

Prof. Shockley’s promotion. The af
fairs of the temple are In a most
flourishing condition and numbers
over three hundred members. The
banquet was served by the members
of the temple themselves and was a
most elegant spread.
