THE GAFFNEY LEDGER,
Tuesday and Friday.
NOTES AND COMMENTS-
Monday was the beet day that the
merchants have enjoyed for Quite a
while. There was a large crowd m
town and trade was brisk at all the
■teres. The merchants who had been
looking gloomy so long were smiling
and looking happy. The Ledger hopes
for the merchants many such days
as Monday.

The two Greenwood papers, the
Journal and index and the Green

Christmas edition which speak well
for the enterprise of these progres

Printers, ag well as other people,
are entitled to some recreation, so
there will be only one issue of The
Ledger next week, that of Tuesday.
We are very sure that none of our
patrons would desire to see The Led
ger force at work while others are
enjoying the holidays. The paper
will appear on the 31st as usual.

It is said in Washington that the
rate war between North Carolina and
Alabama and the Southern Railway
is on the eve of settlement It is said
that the railroads have agreed to a
passenger rate of 2 1-2 cents per mile,
and to sell interchatgable mileage
book at two cents per mile. It is to
be hoped that the statement is true.
It would be a matter of no surprise
to us to learn that this same fight
between the railroads and the States
above named, had a great deal to do
with the present financial stringency.

Senator Jeff Davis, of Arkansas,;
has broken the record by making a
they do not know them. It would
probably be as well for other coun
ties to await the result In Anderson
before adopting the plan, because we
feel certain that the first capital case
which is called for trial in that county
where the defendant has employed
able counsel that the legality of this
plan will be attacked.
A Card.
To the Public:
I respectfully ask my friends and
the public in general, to suspend
judgment on the report of the Inves
tigating Committee, which I am in
formed, will appear in this isstfe of
The Ledger, in so far as same affects
me unfavorably, until my side of the
question can be heard.
I repeatedly demanded a hearing
before the committee, but same was
denied me. I feel confident that I
can satisfy the public as to any
charges made and will be glad to
do bo.
The committee informed me that
the principle charges are on taxation
of costs, and I state here that I never
charged a cent that I did not believe
the law allowed me.
Respectfully,

ANNOUNCEMENTS-
For Legislature.
ThSy Wsrs twHidlsd.
Richard Mansfield, the recently de
ceased actor, hired a private secre-
tary a few days ago, but was com
pelled to discharge him because he
could not spell and was otherwise
rather lame In the matter of educa
tion. wlen the young man had re
ceived the notice of his dismissal he
went to the actor and asked for an
explanation, says the Boston Trans
cript
‘‘The fact Is,” he was told, “your
education Is too meagre for the
requirements of the position.”
Greatly offended, the ex-secretary
exclaimed: “Why, sir, my parents
spent $5,000 on my education.”
“Then, my dear boy.” said the ac
tor. “I would advise them to Institute
proceedings for the recovery or we
money. They were swindler' ”
Another story told of him was his
witty reply to the promoters who came
to him for capital to float “the
greatest scheme since Col. Sellers’
time.” They painted their prospects
in more colors than the rainbow, and
their optimistic verbiage was more
brilliant than an autumn sunset
Mr. Mansfield listened; then asked,
with delicious sangfroid: “Do you
know why the Lord said to Ananias,
‘Stand forth?’” Upon receiving a
negative reply, he said: “Well, I
don’t either, unless It was that you
three could stand first, second and
third.”
