Recent Happenings In and Around the City, and Gt.ier Events Gath ered by the Local News Editor. -Cotton sold 0. the Gaffney marbet yesterday for 11^40. Numbers of people in town had their water pipes to freeze and burst Thursday night. Rev. S. B. Harper will fill his regu lar appointment at Buford Street Methodist church next Sunday. Creed Moore has added to his stable a handsome pair of gray horses which travel well together. Those who have seen it, say that Mahara’s Mlntrels, which are billed to appear at the Star Theatre on the 12th, Is a good show. Cotton is bringing five dollars per bale more than it was bringing a week ago. Wb hope it will bring ten dollars a bale more next week. A meeting of the democrats of the city is called for to-night to arrange for the municipal election which will be held the first of the year. The Star Theatre has had the old curtain, which was damaged by fire, replaced by a new one, which was supplied by the Imperial Curtain Co., of Philadelphia, Pa. For some unexplained reason, the young ladles of Limestone College did not repeat the play “Turned Up,” last Tuesday night, as was adveiv tised. The condition of the Gaffney banks does not smack of financial stringen cy. The statement of the Merchants and planters bank must be very grat ifying to the management. Horses, mules and cattle are as high as they were before money got so scarce. Quite a number of horses have been sold in Gaffney and vi cinity recently at top prices. The glnners report which came out yesterday shows ginned to date 8,338,000. This Is 1,683.686 short of last year’s report. Cotton is bound to go up on this report. Work on the Merrimac mills is progressing rapidly ag could T$e ex pected. A large number of the houses for employees have been fin ished already. Douglas Westrope, who has finish ed a course In the School of Engrav ing in Philadelphia, has returned to Gaffney and is staying ir the s ore with his father. Dr. Charles A. Jefferies, who has been 111 for several dayt in Spartan burg was brought home Friday. His many friends will be glad to know that he Is steadily improving. Considerable cotton was sold last week at 111-4 cents. Don’t sell yet, boys, unless the man whom you owe Is compelled to have his money. Then let her slide, unless yon can raise the money from some other source. The Christmas holidays will soon be here, and but for the financial stringency we would all be happy. Well, let’s try to enjoy the holidays anyway. They only get around once a year. By a change of schedule on the Southern, No. 11 which has been ar riving here at about 12:40 will arrive at about 1.40, or one hour later. No. 12 northbound, will reach here about 3.87 instead of 4.20 ag formerly. Arthur Littlejohn, colored, charged with gambling, was given a prelimi nary {examination by Magistrate Camp on Saturday and was dl*- charged. The State wag represented by Col. T. B. Butler, and J. B. Bell represented the defendant. The Ledger hag on stock a supply of titles to real estate and mortgages to real estate blanks printed on extra quality linen paper which we will sell for $120 per quire. These are elegant blanks and the price Is very reasonable considering their quality. Dr. Simms says he has a young Rhode Island Red rooster who heard so many chlckeng squawk for the last time during the conference, that he hid behind the graded school build ing for two days and he had to drive him home twice before he was wil ling to stay. A couple of enthusiastic nimrods went out Thanksgiving day provided with guns, dogs and two boxes of shells each. They returned minus all their shells and with one rabbit and a jay bird. They said the day was all right for Shooting, bnt was not favorable for killing things. Mr. A W. Smith, of the Macedonia section, died on the 5th Inst, and was burled st the Macedonia churchyard on the 7th, Dr. A. M. Simms and Rev. A. D. Davidson conducting the funeral ceremonies. Mr. Smith was one of the best men In the county and his loss will be deeply felt He was about fifty years of age and leaves a wife and three children to mourn big loss. Cal Parish has opened the old Cen tral Hotel, where he will be glad to see his friends. Cal has been in the hotel business for nearly twenty years and knows everything that there Is to know about It. We do not know of a hotel man In the State who is more popular than he, or who has more friends, and It Is a fore gone conclusion that he will get his full share of the patronage. At the Electrl e Theatre. Parentg who are looking for a place to spend the evening with their child ren can do no better than to visit the Edison Elecertic Theatre. The mov ing pictures are clean, amusing and educational. The place is kept neat and comfortable. Polite and cour teous treatment Is assured all pat rons. The subjects for tonight are, “The Sham Beggars,” “The Trouble of a Cook” and “The Window Cleaner." The name of the illustrated song is “The Memories of Childhood.” Educational numbers such as a ‘Bridal Trip to Niagara Falls,” “Clinbing the Alps,” etc., are soon to be presented. Mr. Buckingham intends to merit the patronage of ministers, doctors, lawyers, merchants and of the best people in Gaffney. Give him a call.
