preached at the Methodist church.
His sermnn showed that he is one of
the broadest thinkers in South Caro
lina.
The Sunday morning service opened
with a good old-fashioned love feast at
9:20 a. m., which was led by Rev.
W. W Williams. This meeting was
largely attended and was participated
in by preachers and laymen and mem
bers of othe r denominations. It was
indeed a love feast and much genuine
good feeling prevailed.
On Sunday morning at the Buford
Street Methodist church Bishop M'n -
rison preached a splendid sermon, af
ter which the following deacons were

At the First Baptist church Sunday
morning Dr. L. F Beaty delivered a
most instructive and interesting ad
dress before the Sunday school. Dr.
Beaty is a strong man in the confer
ence and his address made a good im
pression.
At the Baptist church Rev. P. F.
Kilgo preached in the morning, and
Rev. W- M Duncan at night. Reports
from these tell of splendid efforts.
At the Presbyterian church Rev. C.
B. Smith filled the pulpit in the morn
ing and Rev. R. S. Truesdale at night.
From these and those who preached
in the other churches of the city, the
best reports come of sermons of the
highest, order.
T7ie Cherokee Avenue Baptist
church was filled with a large congre
gation Sunday morning at n o’clock,
when Rev. B. R. Tornlpseed, of
Columbia, delighted them with a
splendid sermon. At 3 p. m. Rev.
A. E. Driggers, of Greenville, ad
dressed the B. Y. p. TJ. at this church
and made a lasting impression. At
7:20 Rev. R. A Yongue preached a
magnificent sermon to a congregation
that filled the house.
Row C. D- Mann occupied the pul
pit at the Midway Baptist church at
11 a m and delighted his congrega
tion.
Rev. J L. Harley could not fill his
appointment at Dunton’s Chapel tool
ored) at it a. m., so Rev. J. T. Fow
ler kindly consented to fill the ap
pointment. He preached a sermon
that will linger long with his hearers.
At 7:30 o’clock R f, v. W. 17. Baker oc
cupied the pulpit of this church and
preached a splendid sermon.
Rev. D. M- McLeod occupied the
pulpit at Providence Baptist chureh
and delighted his congregation.
Monday morning conference con
vened with prayer meeting bv Rev.
T. C. O’Deal.'
The bishop finished railing the 20t.h
question and the morning was taken
up hearing reports from the various
boards.
The report, of the board of missions
brought out the fact that for the first
time in the history of this confer
ence the missionary claims have he* n
paid in full. This is remarkable and
a cause of great rejoicing, as this con
ference is one hundred and twenty-
two years old.
Rev. G. T. Harmon gave a telling
and timely talk on this report. Itev.
H. B. Browne followed on the same
line. As a result of these stirring
addresses, the members of the con
ference pledged the support of a mis
sionary for next year, one hundred
preachers pledging ten dollars each.
The following report of the commit
tee on hooks and periodicals was read
and adopted:
Education is the handmaid of re
ligion, not only that education which
is obtained in schools and colleges,
but all knowledge and information
that Is worth while.
The more one knows of the church
the more he is interested in its wel
fare. The Methodist people ought to
be well informed about the past and
current history of their church, and
ought to keep well posted on all its
operations and movements The lay
man who reads his church’s literature
and knows most of what Is doing is
best prepared to lend a loyal and

The Ignorance often displayed by
otherwise intelligent Methodists in
regard to their own church govern
ment and polity would be most ludi
crous if if were not so serious.
We commend the publications of
the church—the Nashville Advocate,
the Epworth Era, the Visitor, Go For
ward. Especially do we commend
our own conference organ, the South
ern Christian Advocate. • It is a most
excellent paper, deserving uur hearty
support. The subscruption list has
been largely increased within the
past year, it ought to he 15,000, and
will be if we all do our duty toward
it.
Let all our ministers make it an
object to circulate good church litera
ture. both books and periodicals,
among the people of their charges. ■k—
it will greatly help them in their work
in creating a more intelligent and
better informed membership, and more
loyal, liberal, zealous and enthusias
tic workers in every department of ***$"

My ministry of the gospel of Christ
in the college has thus far been a
deep joy to me. and increases with
the passing days. God has made me
a Messing in the religious and civil
life about me. Not because of. but
su.ee my coming, the greatest revival
of religion ever experienced bv the
community has developed, and quite
recently a battle of ballots gave the
v r tory to prohibition nearly ten to
one. In both these contests against
the powers of darkness i was per
fectly “at home” as an humble co-

preached from some pulpit. The rail
way facilities are admirable, having
