THE GAFFNEY COTTON MARKET.
We have heard quite a lot of dis
cussion lately among the farmers as
to the price of cotton. Some of them
seemed to think that the buyers were
not paying as much as they should
for the staple. Now, the Gaffney cot
ton buyers have been paying just a
little mere than they have been pay
ing in the neighboring towns. This
statement may be verified by con
sulting the local papers and compar
ing the market price of other towns
and that of Gaffney.
The price of cotton is controlled by
the cotton exchanges, and It follows
that the Gaffney buyers, as well as
those at other points in the cotton
belt, must be goverened by the prices
fixed by the exchanges. We know
that the cotton buyers of Gaffney
would be only too glad to pay fifteen
cents per pound for cotton if they
could do so, but it is the rankest kind
of Tommyrot to expect them to pay
more than they can get in New York
for the cotton.
The farmers of Cherokee county
may rest assured that every buyer on
the Gaffney market is his friend and
that they will pay ag miuch, If not a
little more, than they can get at other
places for their cotton.

The good order, and absence of
drunkenness, which prevailed at the
Spartanburg fair, is a very strong ar
gument in favor of prohibition. If the
dispensaries had been open In Spar
tanburg there would have been in the
crowd of 10,000 people on Wednesday
at least one hundred people under the
Influence of whiskey, as it was we
did not see 'a single drunk man, al
though we met several who said they
needed a drink. Perhaps these per
sons did need it, or thought they did,
but they would have admitted them-, are authorized by the Sanitol

strictly speabing, but one thing Is cer
tain. that is, a great deal less whiskey
is drunk where there is no whiskey
for sale than where it is sold.* This is
the overwhelming testimony of every
county in the state which has voted
out the dispensary, and yet there are

tion has sent an agent to Europe to
make arrangements to sell cotton
direct to the spinner. It strikes us
that it would have been better if this
fact had not been published. The peo
ple who are working to depress the
price of the staple are wise, the
wisest in their generation, and being
“forewarned is being forearmed.”
Those wily and astute gamblers in

move on the part of the association,
will naturally leave nothing undone
to checkmate this move. It is a bad
Idea to give away your ammunition
before going into battle.

, President Geo. L. Carter, of the
South and Western Hallway, told a
reporter for the Charlotte Observer
on the occasion of his recent visit to
that city, that it had not been defi
nitely decided ag to whether or not his
road would run by Gaffney or Spar
tanburg. As has been said in these
columns before, it would be the big
gest thing for Gaffney that hag hap
pened in years if we could induce '
these people to build their road by I
Gaffney. The railroad committee of
the Board of Trade should resume
work on this matter with renewed
energy inasmuch as the route is str
undecided. Tell them about Gaff
ney's large freight receipts and about
our undeveloped mineral resources,
about our sewerage system to or In
stalled. about the county fair and
about a hundred other things which 1
could be mentioned as inducements !
for them to come this way. “Do
about,” gentlemen, and let’s get this
railroad.

The receipts for the three days of
the Spartanburg fair was more than
$6,000, giving a clear profit to the
promoters of $2,000. This Is phenomi-
nal. while Galfney could not hope to
do as well as this, still it Is a forgone
conclusion that a fair at Gaffney would
pay, and pay well. In the first place ;
s fair would be the very best method ;
of advertising to the world our re
sources. and letting people know what
we had. In the next place, It would
bring the people of the county and
town closer together. There are num
bers of Cherokee county people who
never come to Gaffney because they
do not know the Gaffney people, and
If we Inaugurated the fair these peo
ple would nil come to Gaffney, and If
they come once they will keep com
ing, and In this way much good would
be accomplished. Let every oitlzen j
