THE SOUTH AND WESTERN-
ft is to be hoped that the railroad
committee of the Gaffnej Board of
Trade will spare no effort and leave
.©thing undone to induce the man
agement of the South and Western
to aome by Gaffney. It would be
■worth many thousands of dollars an-
ntuUly to our town to have a compet
ing line of road running by Gaffney,
and especially a great trunk line like
the Bouth and Western running into
0 «t town would give us rates from
Cbe coal fields which would result in
th* naving of an immense sum every
your upon coal al me.
Hot only would we save money on
00*1 but on all other articles which
we buy from the storehouses of the
North and West. We are to d by
pemons who are in a position to know,
that tt«m Bostic. N. C.. by way of
Satney. to Union county, there
* ridge running all the way that is
not cut hr a single stream of water,
and that the track could be laid over
this route cheaper than the same
milage over any other route in th
upper part of the State. Gaffney s
freight bills now amount to « o methlng
like $50,000 per year, and with
development of our mineral re80U ™^
and the additional enterprises whidh
will naturally be established with the
advent of 50,000 horse power furnish
ed by Broad river, within less than
two years the amount of freight to
and from Gaffney should easily. he
doubled. Of course this estimate is
somewhat speculative, but the most
pessimistic citizen will have to admit
that this forecast is not unreasonable,
and if the gentlemen who have the
management of this enterprise are
reasonable men, (and being at the
head of an enterprise of this magni
tude shows that they are) it should
not be difficult to show them that It
would be to their advantage to build
their road by way of Gaffney, the
pearl of the Piedmont.

bad one failure within thirty years.

abundance of that brass which you
have been talking about. In the Herald
office, to compare your little chicken-
fighting hamlet to a town which has
the progressiveness and enterprise
which Gaffney has. We had thought
at one time that when we extended
our corporate limits year after next
we would take you in; but if you
make another break or two like that

Ft is unfortunate that our fall term
of court and the State fair conflicts.
Columbia is a great place for reunions
during fair week. Numbers of our
old friends go to Columbia once a
year, who never go anywhere else.
It is suggested that the lawyers ap
ply to Judge Bridges for an order of
injunction against the two events be
ing held simultaneously.
