The seventh convention of the sixth district of Knights of Pythias of the Grand Domain of South Caro lina. met in business session in the castle hall of Limestone Lodge No. 74. on Tuesday morning, with District Deputy W. W- Dixlon, presiding. On Monday night at the opera house Col. W. W. Lumpkin, of Co lumbia, made a most admirable ad dress on pythianism. which was much enjoyed by the Knights as well as by a large and cultured audience com posed of the elite of the city. Jones J. Darby, the chanceller com mander of the local lodge, introduced Mr. W- W. Dixon, district deputy, who in turn introduce^ Col. Uimpkin. At the business meeting Tuesday morning, Mr. Darby, in a beautiful speech, welcomed the visiting dele gates on behalf of the lodge, which was most fittingly responded to by Mr. George B- White, of Ridgeway. J. B. Bell, city attorney, then wel comed the delegates on behalf of the city. Rev. Henry Stokes, of Winns- boro, responded to this in a very elo quent and appropriate speech. Re ports from the various lodges wet then called for and after hearing them the district deputy expressed himself as being much gratified at the condition of the lodges embraced within his jurisdiction. Dr. James H- Thornwell, the rever ed anq beloved grand keeper of re- ; cords and seal, was then called upon, j He delivered i most entertaining and instructive address on the relations of spiritual law’s of the Pythian world. Hon. Elbert H. Aull, of Newberry, the managing editor of the South Carolina Pythian, was then introduc- ' ed, and in a splendid talk of neany an hour, explained the scope and aim of the paper. Mr. Aull took occasion to say during the course of his re marks that the state Company who prints tho paper for hint, had been most. kind, and had been of much as sistance to him in getting out the pa per and had gone much further than the contract called for. Next on the programme was an ad dress by Post Grand Chanceller James A- Summersett, of Columbia, on “What the district conventions have accomplished and what they can do for the good of the order.” Mr. Summersett made a very enter taining address, which was listened to with much interest by all the del egates. The visitors were then taken to Limestone College where a splendid musical programme arranged by Prof. Loring, musical director, of the col lege. wag excellently rendered. , At the close of the entertainment a vote of thanks was tendered to Dr. Lodge, the beloved president of the institu tion, and to those who assisted. The convention then assembled In the castle hall where work in f’ second degree was exemplified; the rank of esquire being conferred upon tw’o- candidates. A large number of the delegates then repaired to the opera house to see “The Holy City,” which was pre sented by a most oxcellet company of artists. The next thing on the pro gramme was the banquet, which was set by Mr. C- G- Parish, of the Com- , mereial Hotel. The menu was all that could be de- : sired and it was well served. Mr. W. S. Hall presided as toast master in an elegant and graceful man ner. Hon. Elbert Aull, of Newberry, made a very happy speecn fn re sponse to the sentiment, “The Press and the Baby.” “Cherokee county” was responded to by Senator J. C. Otts in a very pleas- j ing and entertaining speech. Rev. 8. B. Harper was then asked to respond to "The City of Gaffney,” and his speech caused every resident who was present to feel proud of the ! fact that he lived in Gaffney. # District Deputy Dixon was then called upon to say something about the “Pythian goat and his sprit,” anu what he said was a plenty. H£ paid his respects to almost every member of the local bar, and kept hig audi ence laughing during the whole course of his remarks. The next district convention will convene at Winnsboro. Canlngton, who has many friends in Gaffney, was here Wednes day. Division Roadmaster J. A. Maxwell, of the Southern, was in Gaffney yes terday. Mr. Maxwell Is one of the most popular officials of the road. Mrs. Harry P. Shaw, of Charlotte, N. C., is spending sometime In Gaff ney with her parents, Capt. and Mrs. S. S- Ross.
