and county and the betterment of
our people. It la not the policy of
thla paper to attack any man or aet
of men. We believe that the officers
who are In charge of the affaire of
our city and county are all honest
and conscientious In the discharge of
their several duties. We believe fur
ther that the affairs of Gaffney and
Cherokee county are being conducted
in a more business like and econo
mical manner, and If this is the case
it Is the solemn duty of every citi
zen of the county to support the ad
ministration, and bid them godspeed
in their efforts to give ua a safe and
economical government. Financially
our county is in a most flourishing
condition. A gentleman who knows
whereof he speaks recently Informed
us that we have enough money in the
treasury to settle the railroad bonds
as fast as they become due. it is a
well known fact that the taxes in our
county are considerably lower than
they are in either Spartanburg,
Union or York, thus demonstrating
the wisdom of cutting loose from
these counties and forming a govern
ment of our own. We sincerely be
lieve that the time is not far distant
when Cherokee will be known as the
banner county of the State, and it is
the purpose of the writer in the near
future to point out in an article why
he believes this to be so.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The county fair will come up for
consideration at the Board of Trade
meeting next Friday night. The
time Is now to commence. If yon
have any interest in your town come
out to the Board of Trade Friday
night at 7:30. You are needed. A
dozen men can’t do all the work of
the Board of Trade.

That excellent paper, the Gastonia
Gazette, comes out in an industrial
edition setting forth the advantages
of Gastonia and Gaston county In a
manner which would reflect credit
upon a metropolitan paper in a town
five times the size of Gastonia. The
young men who are at the head of
this paper deserve great credit for
this piece of splendid enterprise.

A negro was tried in Magistrate
Bridge’s court Thursday charged with
killing a dog. The defendant was re
presented by J- B., Bell, hut the prose
cutor and the magistrate both being
on the other side, the defendant, of
course, was convicted! The negro
was fined a ten spot or thirty days
on the gang. He gave bond and ap
pealed to the court of sessions.

Friday night is the regular meeting
of the Board of Trade. The question
of town sewerage will be up for con
sideration. A proposition will be
presented to vote $65,000 in bonds and
commence work next spring, and af
ter the constitutional limit Is raised
vote as many additional bonds as may
be needed. By this plan a year will
be gained in completing the worb.
Nothing will add so much to Gaffney
as sewerage. Sewerage secured, a
modem hotel will follow.

Le: us hear from some of our farm
er friends what they think of the
county fair idea. We know that the
farmers are busy now gathering their
corn and cotton, but we intend to
keep this idea agitated as long as
there is any prospect of its being suc
cessful. We know of no better way
of taking a few days recreation after
a year’s hard work than to attend a
county fair. It seems to The Ledger
that the young people of each neigh
borhood should become enthused
over the Idea and urge their fathers
and mothers to give the project their
hearty support. It Is useless for the
town of Gaffney to attempt to carry
out the idea unless the hearty support'
of the farmers of the county can be
secured, so let’s get a move on us,
and in 1908 all meet In Gaffney at
our first annual fair.

“Brother, you look as if something dieadful had happened?’
‘Yes, Mr. John Doe died last night leaving his wife and three Httle
S»
children homeless and penniless in the world.’ Sad, sad indeed!
How easily he could hav? carried a couple of thousand dollars of The
Southern Life and Trust Co’s. Economic Bonds. That insurance is not
costly, yet, it is among the safest and best in the world. My advice to
any man who has or has not a family is to go to the Gaffney Trust Co s.
office in the National Bank building and examine these policies.
‘The company handles TwentyJour different forms of policies,
any of which gives the finest values on the market. Think of John Doo
and don’t wait. Take your policy before sunset today. You may fail
to pass your medical examination if you wait another day.
‘Go straight to the Gaffney Trust Co. and see for yourself—seeing is
believing—experiencing is knowing—you can sleep satisfied if your
family is protected-PROTUCT THEM NOW BY INSURING IN THE
SOUTHERN LIFE AND TRUST COMPANY.’ ”
