Mystery of Vessels Which Disappear
Without Known Cause-
Nothing is more fascinating than try
ing to fathom the secrets of the deep,
particularly win u it comes to speculat
ing on the fate of vessels which have
disappeared without known cause.
There are many such cases, and they
are absolutely baffling. Ships have
gayly left port, with every prospect of
a safe voyage, never to be heard of
again.
What are the secrets of these mys
terious vauishings of stately ships with
tiif'ir crews and cargoes? In nineteen
cases out of twenty the secrets lie with
the ships many fathoms deep and will
perhaps never leap to light. To thi;

Shipping Method Which Proves Big
Saving to California Qrowera.
For years there has been great toes
from decay in shipping fresh fruits,
both citrus and deciduous, from this
state to eastern markets. The rail
roads have seldom been able to get
fruit trains through on schedule time,
and the necessary allowance for delay
has compelled growers to pick their
fruit before it was fully ripe, to the
loss of some of the flavor and also to
the loss of some of the weight which
the fruit would gain if left on the tree.
Some fruits- pears, for example—ripen
best after picking and are regularly
picked quite greeu, but others do not.

New Substance Brought Up In Boring
For an Aqueduct.
Workmen making soundings for the
Catsklll aqueduct at Varlan’s Mills,
near Peeksklll, N. Y., hare gone to a
depth of 380 feet without striking a
solid foundation. The location of the
drill is to be changed within a few
days If a good bottom is not struck.
At the depth of about 350 feet the drill
went through a stratum which gave
forth a liquid of dark red color, almost
the color of blood and quite thick, says
tn Ossining (N. Y.) special dispatch to
the New York Times. Samples of the
fluid have been sent to New York for
analysis.
The men on the machines say that
they have never seen anything like It,
and they are curious to know' the na
ture and character of the subsiaace.
After the red liquid had been pumped
out the drill passed through a very flue
quality of molding sand.

toward the Goodwin sands. She was
a fair picture to look on as she moved
