Workmen will begin laying brick on the new poatofflce building today. There were no public Bales of real estate at the court house yesterday. The Cherokee Drug Company have had an attractive sign painted on the Frederick street side of their store. The Board of School Trustees will meet tonight and determine the ax- act date of the opening of the city waded schools. Miss Julia Wood, of Anbury, has accepted a position with J. W. Tolle- soc, one of the leadng dry goods mer chants of Limestone street. Rev. F. C. Hickson occupied the pulpit at Elbethel church Sunday and was listened to attentively by a large and appreciative congregation. Douglas Westrope, son of Mr. T. H. Westrope, the Jeweler, will leave Gaffney today to go to Philadelphia where he will enter the school of en graving. The (?) Club was entertained last Thursday by Miss Nellie Wood and again Wednesday by Miss . Kate Brown. The members report a good time at both places. A protracted meeting has been be gun at Midway bv Rev. B. G. Ross, who is being assisted by Rev. B. L. Hoke, of Blacksburg. There are two services daily, at 11 a. m., and 8 p. m. The outlook for fall business Is most propitious. Cotton has begun to open and In a few weeus cue fleecy staple will begin to roll in. The crop in this section will be aver age, if not better. Chas. Hardin, who has been with the Cherokee Drug Company for the past year, has resigned to accept a position with the S. F. Royster Fer tilizer Company, of Columbia. He leaves today to assume his new du ties. L. M. Coob, former street overseer and later with the Dravo Company and the Southern Power Company, has accepted a position with the store of the Gaffney Mianufoturlng Com pany. He will be In the shoe and hat department Mr. Chas. s. Porter and Mias Ray mond Porter were married Sunday at the residence of the bride's mother, Mrs. Ardmlna Porter. Magistrate C. T. Bridges made the happy ooupie one. They are being congratulated by their many friends. The Farmer's Union was organized at Rehoboth last week. Hal. B. Jef feries was elected president W. B. M. Kirby, vice-president, and B. M. Kirby, secretary and treasurer. The object of the organization is educa tional and co-operative. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Gaines are rejoicing over the arrival of a bounc ing baby boy at their home. The lit tle stranger arrived about noon Sun day. We hope he will wax and grow strong and be as good a marksman and have “ 8°od eyesight as his father. Dennis White, a young white man was arrested Friday and carried be fore United State Commissioner J. B. Bell on a charge of selling whis key. He was committed to Jell to await trial at United States court at Greenville. He was released Satur day on bond. The new pumps at the power house have been Installed and are being ad justed by an expert from the factory. When everything is in readiness Gaffney will have one of the oest water works systems In the country, and it will be as pure water as it is possible to secure. The theatrical season opens this month. Manager Scbloss has not yet supplied the local manager with a list of the attractions, but the Indica tions are that it will be one of the best seasons in the history of the local house and the list will embrace some of the best attractions on the road. The revival which has been going on at the Buford Street Methodist church conducted by the pasor. Rev. S. B. Harper, assisted by Rev. J. W. Speake, closed Sunday night. There were several additions to the church during the progress of the meeting and much good i s expected to result therefrom. Mr. Charlie Spence and Miss Ma mie Raines were married at the home of the bride's father, Mr. Smith Raines, Sunday morning at 10 o’clock. The ceremony was performed by Rev. p. Whelchel. Their many friends are congratulating the young couple and wishing them many happy re turns of the dav. The Gaffney Manufacturing Com pany’s fast baseball club met State Line’s diamond artists in a good game of baseball at Limestone park on Saturday. The game resulted in a victory for the mill boys. The score whs five to two. Batteries, Vinson and Sparks for Gaffney, Burgess and Shehan for State Line. The congregation of the Buford Street Methodist church compliment ed their pastor. Rev. 8. B. Mr. Mack Alli son and Miss Lizzie Daniel ware Joined in wedlock at 9:30 o’clock Sun day morning, at the home of Mire. Al lison; and Mr. Omie Bostick and Miss Ida Harris at 2:45 Sonday afternoon. Both couples live In the mill Tillage of the Gaffney Manufacturing Com pany. Mr. C. B. Fisher, the enterprising and wide-awake agent of the South ern Express Company, of this city, has succeeded in getting hts com pany to put on a wagon for the col lection and delivery of express pack ages within the town, free of charge. Mr. Fisher has the thanks of the P 60- pie of the city for this piece of enter prise which will prove such a con venience to them. Hon. c. A. S. Campbell, one of the most prominent farmers of Cherokee, presented The Ledger force with a watermelon Saturday that was easily the largest of the season so far as this office is concerned. All the force except the “Old Man” and Nathaniel Burgess, enjoyed this fine melon and they were away, for which fact the others gave due thanks when the watermelon put in its appearance. EDUCATIONAL RALLY. A Pleasant Event at Cherokee Ave nue School. Prof. E. C. Elmore made the ad dress of the evening at the education al rally of the Cheroneo aw-ir. school Saturday night. The exercis es, which were well attended, were held In the Cherokee Avenue Baptist church. Rev. Mr. Hamrick, pastor of the church, opened the exercises with prayer, a splendid program, consist ing of speeches, recitations, music— vocaj and instrumental—was carried out with a degree of success that at tested the careful training that had been expended in getting ready for the occasion. Prof. Elmore, in his address, stress ed the duties ©f parents in the traln- ino- of their children; how they should co-operate with the teacher. He paid splendid tribute to the value of an educational training. Those who heard his address spoke in the high est terms of the embryo candidate for the office of the State superintendent of education. Col. Thomas B: Butler 4lso made an address. His remarks were along very practical lines, urging tQe impor tance of parents availing themselves p f the educational opportunities of the day by giving the children the advantages afforded by the public schools. Prof. F. B. Shuford. he efficient and popular principal of the Cherokee Avenue school, made a lew appro priate remarbs, thanking the sneak ers and those who kindly furnished the music. The meeting was then dimissed by Rev. Mr. Hamrick, and the audience adjourned to the basement of the church, where Ice cream and other refreshments were served. The erF^ nlng was a very profitable and enjoy able occasion, and all those who were so fortunate as to be present will long remember the event. The musical part of the program under the direction of Prof. W. L. Johnson, consisted of vocal music beautifully rendered by Mrs. Oscar Shanks, Miss Annie Johnson and Miss Myrtle Gaffney. Miss Pablita Gorham and Miss Irene Wheat gave a spirited rendition of Qnl Vive Galop Reavo Duo, and in another instrumen tal piece, Mrs. Gooding, violin, and Mr. June Carr, mandoline, gave ex cellent assistance. The recitations by Misses Cash and Crocker were much admired and suited to the oc casion. Roland Gain•.s’ Markmanehln. A commotion was created over at N. S. Burgess’ house Saturday night bv a strange dog entering the house unforbldden. Nat qhased the dog out of the house and It. ran under the house When he went out to lot ttie dog out at the back gate the doe be gan to trv to fight him. Neighbor Roland Gaines herd the cries of Nat and hastened forth with his trusty gun. The dog was under the house and it was pitch dark, but Roland pulled the trigger, and although he could hardly see his hand before his face he says he did not hit the dog, but knows that he hit a rock, because he saw the bullet strike it. Another shot, however, hit the dog. Roland’s markmanshlp is only equalled b'- his eyesight, because he can see a bullet traveling through the air and hit a rock in the dark! First Baptist Church Notes. Dr. Simms ^ras with his people again on Sunday and there were two good congregations and services. Prof. Chambers and wife and Miss McArthur contributed to the helpful ness and pleasure of the services. Prof. Chambers was at the organ. Mrs. Chambers accompanied upon the violin and both she and Miss Mc Arthur sang solos. The church tendered the use of Its house to the Methodist church ter conference purposes and also in structed R. E. LeMaster to put a new carpet on the floor. All lines of church work will be pushed afresh and a good fall and winter’s work is ’ooked forward to. 7 ■ Meeting of Woman’s club. The Woman’s Club will hold its I first meeting for the coming year on ! next Thursday afternoon at 4:30 ^ | o’clock, at the residence of Mrs. Na than Littlejohn.
