fondly addressed him as “My Dear
Appelt” We take the following from
Mr. Appelfs paper, the Manning
Times:
The Parkersville (West Virginia)
State Journal was not well Impressed
with Senator Tillman’s recent lecture
in that town, and makes the follow
ing comment:
If one were called upon without
knowledge of his idenlty to slae him up
after listening to his bombastic tirade
the verdict would probably be that
he was a half-educated. Ill-bred coun
try lawyer who prides himself upon
being the cock-of-tbe-walk in his own
small community. His argument on
the race question was for the most
part a rehash of newspaper and mag
azine articles on the subject thirty
years ago. replete with outbursts of
vicious hate incredible. The pres
ence of cultivated ladles and young
girls who formed half of his largo
audience wag no restraint to his pro
fanity and obscenity, the latter being
of the most shocking type. It is to
be regretted that the cause of the
State ft>r whom he pretends to speak
angel of death has crossed no
threshold of a friend; that no man
driven by liquor, hatred or fear has
taken the Hfe of a fellow-human; that
no poor devil, haunted by the past
or the misdeeds of some other, has
crossed the great divide by his own
hand. So the next time you pick up
a paper that doesn’t announce a tra
gedy. give a Httle thanks instead of
grunting because there is no news.

The usual group was gathered
around “The New York Store" talk
ing of Dick Mulllu’s lost donkey.
Everyone had been looking for it
without success, since It had strayed
out of the pasture lot a day or two
before.
Jim Thompson, a lanky individual,
regarded as more or less of an Imbe
cile by the townsmen, finally spoke
up:
“I think I cpuld find your donkey.”
How can you find him. Jim,” asked
the owner, “when the best men In
town ain’t been able to git trace of
him?’’
“Wla-al,” rejoined Jim, “I kin try,
can’t I? How much is it worth to
ye?"
The owner “allowed it was worth
a dollar.
“All right,” said Jim, and walked
away on his search. To the surprise
of all he returned in less than half an
hour leading the missing donkey by a
rope halter.
“Sakes alive!" exclaimed Mullins,
as he paid over the dollar,“how In the
world did ye find him so quick, Jim?”
“Wa-al,” returned Jim, “I thought
to myself, ‘Now. ef I was a jackass
where would I go?' And so I went
there, and he had.”

It wag a little out of the way church
the first Sunday in May, just after the
“foot washing” had been observed,
which Is a custom followed by that
particular sect of people, that the
preacher announced that the congre
gation would join In singing hymn
No. 23, “My soul, be on thy guard;
ten thousand foes,” etc.
Jones, a red faced, broad shoulder-
ed giant, tried to put on a tot of ener
gy and sing tenor, for this was a
special occasion, and he seemed to
be the whole chnrch. since he warn
musical director and the only choir
they had, as well as Janitor and dea
con. I n fact, he did everything but
preach. Jones rose up and in sten
torian tones began to sing in a pitch
too high. When he got to the second
line (“Ten thousand foes,” etc.). It
wag necessary for his voice to rise
beyond his capacity, and he broke
down. The congregation began to
titter, and a brother in the front row
said:
“Tears to me like you’re a leetle
bit too high.”
An old gentleman in his shirt
sleeves, over In the amen corner, rose

“S'pose we Just try five thousand.”
