SAM L. FORT, Real Estate and Fire Insurance Saerstary Orders Inscription on New Building Changed. If Jamee Wilson, secretary of the de partment of agriculture, held the port folio of the treasury department, “B Pluribus Unum” would In all likeli hood cease to be the inscription on America’s almighty dollar, for th& sec retary has recently given utterance to his abhorrence of “Latin bosh” in pic turesque if not poetic language, says a Washington special to the New’ York Times. This abhorrence is of such a decided nature that it has resulted in sculptors having to rechisel the inscriptions on the new’ agriculture building. The new’ home for the department when finished will cost about $3,000,- 000 and is nearing completion. The secretary is taking as much interest In its progress as though it were de signed for a country home for himself. On the uortli front are four pedi ments, on each of which are a male and a female figure, seated, with a shield between them. On these shields are inscribed "Fructus,” “Cereales,” “Forestes” and “Flores.” A few’ days ago the head of the de partment came into the office of his as sistant and friend, Dr. B. T. Gallo way, chief of the bureau of plant in dustry, who is also deeply interested In the pi ’us for the new building, and In the course of their conversation the pediments were considered. These are In full view of Dr. Galloway's office. In glancing at them and in looking at the photos that had just been taken Secretary Wilson asked: ‘ Doctor, what do these words mean? i ‘Fructus’—what on earth Is that?” “Why, that’s the Latin for fruit, and | the others mean cereals, forests and llowers,” replied Galloway. “Well, why don't we say so, then, 1 and cut out this foolish Latin?” was | the prompt reply. Orders were thou given that the stonecutters erase the offensive w’ords and substitute up to date “United States.” Dr. Galloway closed the Incident by remarking that it was Just as well to change them, as there was no such Latin word as “forestes” anyway, and that, at least, would have to be changed. LUXURY FOR THE PRESIDENT. Splendid Reception Room For His Use In Washington's Union Depot. The new Union railway station at Washington will be supplied with a unique feature—a special entrance and reception room for the president of the United States. The president’s entrance is an archway of marble thirty’ feet in width, says Rene Bachc In the course of an article in Harper’a Weekly. “On alighting from his car riage beneath it the foremost citiwen of the notion will step into a vestibule of noble proportions—of the same width as the archway and twenty feet In depth, .n this vestibule the per sona who accompany him will be wait ed upon by trained attendants, while the president himself will seek pri vacy In a room set apart for his ex clusive use on the right hand adjoin ing. “The president’s room, as it is called, will be most beautifully and luxurious ly furnished. Costly oriental rugs will cover the floor; the ceiling will be done In gold and color, and the walla will be paneled in blue silk. In the middle will ije a table suitable for writing, provided with a solid sliver Inkstand and other appurtenances to match, this and all the other articles of furniture being of mahogany. Ail of this luxury jvill not cost the chief executive a penny, hut will be paid for out of the pockets of the railroad companies.” Unique Reunion of Veterans. Here’s a new thing in the trust line. The ministers of Kankakee, 111., have formed a local trust to control mar riage ami burial fees, says the New York Tribune. They must have $5 for performing either the marriage or burial service, although the by’aws of the union do not prohibit them from taking more if it is offered to them. Well, that's pretty tough, because marriage and death might properly be regarded as ’he necessaries of life. Being horn is also a necessary of life, but the Kankakee baby will not have to bear the expenses of Us own debut. I Therefore we congratulate the unborn ' of Kankakee. THE LEDGER.
