W. L. Henderson, the other defendant, who was sentenced to twelve years and to whom ball can not be granted except by the supreme court, has de cided to go to the penitentiary and take his time. Owing to the condi tion of Henderson’s hands, being badly wounded by Morse the night of the killing, he will necessarily have to be given light work. The people of Richland county have voted against establishing a county court. L. D. Walker, convicted of man slaughter, in Laurens county in 1906 has been pardoned by Gov. Ansel. The citizens of Anderson county have voted against Issuing bonds In the sum of SSOO.OOO for building good roads. • The dspensary was voted out in Chesterfield county Tuesday. The dispensary faction will make an ef fort to have the election set aside on the grounds of irregularities. Gov. Ansel Tuesday acted on a number of petitions for pardons pre sented during the past few days. Of the five presented four were refused and the other was a commutation. A1 Christensen, the “Boston Won der,” defeated George Severn in Greenville Tuesday night at the Grand theatre in one of the finest wrestling matches ever seen in that city The match was for all of the receipts in the best three out of five falls. President E. D. Smith of the South Carolina Cotton association, was in Spartanburg Tuesday en route to Zir- conia, N. C. Mr. Smith was in At lanta Monday on his way to Texas, but he decided to turn back and spend his time at Zirconia until the telegraphers’ strike is over. The Hibernian society in Charles ton i8 the latest social organization to change its methods of serving li quors to its members and comply with the terms of the Carey-Cothran act. The Commercial club of that city set the example several days i ago and it is the purpose of the other social organizations to fall into line. Mr. Claude H. Alexander, of Pick ens, originally of Greenville, one of the most prominent men of that sec tion of South Carolina, died in Ashe ville Tuesday at the age of thirty-three years. Mr. Alexander was a retired banker, having quit active business life about a year ago on account of 111 health. For several months he has been quite sick. The remains «^ere pent to his home for interment. Four young white boys were arrest ed in Greenville Tuesday charged with smashing the clock and piano in the graded school building in that city. They were two painter boys, Will Proctor and a boy named Ham mock. The arrests were made on warrants sworn out by the trustees. Three of the boys were released on bonds in the sum of $500 each, while one, Howard Painter, remains in Jail. ■ Lena Hellams, a rather pretty young woman, whose home is said to be in Charlotte, N. C.. tried to end her life at the Magnolia cafe in Spar tanburg Tuesday by drinking a small bottle of laudanum which she had purchased a few hours before. The heroic efforts of physicians saved the despondent girl’s life and she is sor- rv for her deed and is going to re turn to he,- mother in North Caro lina. This is a story of unrequited • love. Moss p. Hayes and J. F. Miller, formerly members of the State con stabulary during the days of the old dispensary system, have been ap pointed special constables by Gov. Ansel under the provisions of the Carey-Cothran act for the enforce ment of the whiskey law in Spartan burg county. They have received their commission from Gov. Ansel and just as soon as they give the required bnd will enter upon the discharge of their duties. Sheriff W. H. Coleman, of Rich land, after six years of patient wait ing. has captured Frank Clutch, a negro who is wanted for having kill ed, Ed Tolliver in Richland county, October 26, 1901. Clutch ran away and thus Jeopardized his safety when ’ he li put on trial, for his plea of self- defense, which be now advances, will not appear quite so plausible. The killing occurred on the Arthur place, about ®ix miles south of Columbia, and a game of craps was the occas ion of the homicide. The supreme court, in affirming a decision of the circuit court, has de cided to award James Fields $800 for a ducking be received Jp a mill reser voir in Lancaster, where be bad gone to solicit labor for a cotton mill in 4 Fairfield county. The plaintiff sued the Lancaster cotton mills and Skip per, the superintendent, far $25,000 damages, alleging the indignity to have been maliciously inflicted upon him in pursuance of a preconcerted plan.
