The residence of Mr. Sumter Little
john. on Smith and Petty street*
was almost 4 otally destroyed by fire
early Sunday morning. The Are
alarm was sounded about one o’clock
and many willing workers were soon
o n the scene of the conflagration.
No adequate resistance could be of
fered the flames as they had gained
great headway before being noticed.
The building and much of the con
tents was a complete loss. Mr. Lit
tlejohn only carried $300 Insurance
on his residence and $100 on his
household goods. It is thought that
his loss will reach $1,000.
"While searching the ruins Monday
a lot of silverware was found that
was uninjured, save from the smoke,
and a little rubbing made it as good
as new. Some jewelry was al<>
found that was uninjured. The
house was a one-story structure with
a basement underneath. The re
frigerator was in the basement and
it contained a block of ice and the
ice had not melted, notwithstanding
that the entire top of the house was
destroyed.

wants to organise a cement block

Found Dead in a Pullman Berth.
A sensation was created at the
Southern passenger station yester
day morning when No. 36 rolled in
from the south. The train was forced
to stop her e an d wait for orders as
to the disposition of a dead body
found yesterday morning in one of
| the berths of the Pullman. It seems
that the dead lady whose name was
Mrs. J. Ganard, had a tickot from
Galveston, Texas, to New York. Her
suit case, however, had Ocean
Springs, Miss*, opposite her name.
From the train crew it was found
jlhat she retired Wednesday night
| seemingly all right and on her not
j arising yesterday morning and not
! answering calls investigations were
made, disclosing he r dead body. When
I death occurred was not known. Con-
I ductor Hill received orders to leave
! the body at Blaobsburg.
Death of Mias Leila Pryor.
Miss Leila Pryor, the second
daughter of Mr. j. C. Pryor, of this
city, died in Columbia on Tuesday
She has been in ill health for some
time. Her lx)dy was brought to the
city on Wednesday and yesterday
was laid to rest in Oakland Cemetery.
The funeral services were conducted
by Rev. Dr Simms, assisted by Rev.
S. B Harper. The pall bearers were:
Ix)gan Warmoth, Charles Austell.
Ernest Humphries and Bernard
Crocker.
Wm. Miller Dead.
WHlliam Miller, a well known citi
zen of Gaffney, died at his home in
this city Wednesday about noon.
Mr. Miller has been a resident of
Gaffney and Cherokee for twenty-
five years. He has been in ill health
for a long time. He was about sixty
years of age.
