Thirteen cents was being offered
for cotton yesterday, but there was

Magistrate H. Frank Camp has
opened his office in the A. Robert-
son building over Harper’s market.
The Rev. L. A. Cooper, State
evangelist and his singer, will begin

tist. church July 7.
On Sunday June JOth at Sardis
church, Rev. T. B. Owen, P. C.,
there will he two services with din
ner on the ground. The public is
cordially invited.
The streets were pretty well filled
with peopl e yesterday. The heavy
rains of Sunday released them from
ihe farm and here was the addition
al attraction of court to bring them
to town.
.1. A. Carroll is back home after a
visit to the railroad camp of Hollis,
l.ipscomb A- Company in Virginia.
Mr. Carroll is the company of this
firm. He reports that they are mov
ing dirt right along and the boys are
doing well.
There was a ids crowd at Pied-
tnont Springs Sunday. They went
down from Blacksburg, Gaffney and
other points and mine host Hopper
had till he could attend to. We are
always pleased to note the prosperity
of the Piedmont. Springs.
Rev. L. R. Gaines and wife left
yesterday for Atlanta, Ga., where
Mrs. Gaines will be operated on at
the Grady hospital. Mr. Gaines’
friends, a* well as those of his wife,
will watch the result of the operation
with interest and pray for its suc
cess.
At Timbe r Ridge school house on
Thursday evening at 8 o’clock there
will lie ‘a moving picture exhibition
that is educating and instructive.
There will be scenes from the Life
of Christ, also a series entitled
“Around the World in Eighty Min
utes,’’ illustrated songs, etc.
The directors of the Merchants and
Planters Bank met last Thursday
afternoon at 1 o’clock and declared
the usual semi-annual dividend of 4
per cent. This is one of the most
prosperous banking institutions in
this section and it is a pleasure to
note the success wRh which they are
meeting.
Supervisor Felix Lipscomb will
this week send the county scraper
down to Limestone and clean off the
ball ground and race track for the
Fourth of July celebration. This be
ing an affair in which the entire
county is interested there ran be no
objection to the county lending a
helping hand in this manner.

bach’s vocal duet, “My Faith Looks
up to Thee,” Mrs. Oscar Shanks and
Mr.' L. U. Campbell being the vocal
ists. No special music was given at
night, the afternoon storm prevent
ing a full attendance.
The directors of the W hittaker
Cotton Mill?, of Blacksburg met Fri
day and declared a C per cent divi-
dond 3 per cent payable July 1st and
3 per cent January 1st. 1908. This
mill is on a finn foundation and the
outlook i; most encouraging. Mr.
Preparations fo r a Bia Celebration
Ar e Being Made.
| The preparations for the 4th of
i July celebration continue and the
outlook is that the event will be a
pronounced success. A full program
will ho printed in next Friday’s Led-
{ ger. I n the meantime It may be de-
| pended upon that the committee will
do Its best to leave nothing undone
that will contribute to the success
of the occasion Among the attract-
| i<ms will he a game of ball between
| Grassy Pond and the Gaffney Manu
facturing Company's team. This
will take place In the forenoon Ar
rangements have been made for a
goat race, an ox race and a mule
race. These will be entirely new
features but thoroughly amusing.
Already seven persons have ap
plied for privileges. This does not
include the barbecue, so there will
be plenty of refreshments. It is the
aim of the committee to make it a
general big county holiday and pic
nic and we hope to have people here
from all parts of the county. Mr.
Lipscomb Is trying to arrange a
game of ball between Blacksburg
and Gaffney. The Blacksburg team
lias so far this season had the best
of our boys and if this arrangement
is completed we may look for a bat
tle royal.
It has been suggested that the
owners of automobiles decorate
their machines . ad have an automo
bile display. We hope this sugges
tion will he acted upon.

Death of Margurite pridmore.
Mor e than his allotted shar e of
sorrow has befallen Mr. Hampton
Pridmore within six months. Last
December he lost his mother by
death. In March his beloved wife
was called to her last reward, a few
weeks ago his baby died, and on Sun
day Margurite, his little three-year-
obi daughter passed away. Margurite
was the idol of Mr. Pridmore’s heart.
Sho was a sweet, prattling babe
whose winsome manner was entwin
ing itself around his hearstrlngs. At
the time of her death she w’as at the
home of her uncle, Mr. John H. Wil
kins. kinsville. The blow Is a
heavy on e to Mr. Pridmore and he
hag the universal sympathy of a
large circle of acquaintances. The
funeral took place yesterday after
noon and the little form was laid to
rest in Oakland cemetery, this city,
beside the body of the mother which
haff preceded it only a few short
months.
Swafford-Poag.
The Rock Hill correspondent of
the Charlotte Observer had the fol
io win.!; ite m in that paper yesterday:
“Miss Margaret Poag. of this city,
will be married to Mr. R. G. Swafford,
of Gaffney, on tho morning of Tues
day, June 25th, at the home of the
bride’s parents on Block street. The
bride is a charming young lady and
has many friends here. The groom
Is one of Gaffney’s prosperous citi
zens. They leave Immediately after
the ceremony for a visit to the expo
sition."
Bob Swafford is one of Gaffney’s
best known young business men. He
is a partner of Mr. J. D. Goudelock
o f tlie firm of Goudelock & Swafford.
Miss Poag Is also well and favorably
known here, having lived here for
some time.
The First Machine.
Messrs. B. G. Kune and J L.
Daniels leave today for Charlotte,
where they go to build the first cot
ton stalk fiber n acliine. They have
eontraeted with the Mecklenburg
Iron Works to mat.-e the first ma-
ehino and the patterns. After the
commercial value of the machine
ha - been practically demonstrated a
machine shop sufficient to turn out
t!"- machine.' in large quantities will
be built at Gaffney, which is to be
known as the home of the Cotton
Stalk Fiber Machine Company.

During the electrical storm Sunday
afiernoo;; lightning struck the Postal
Telegraph Company's office and
played havoc with things. Both ends
of the cable wires burned out, and
tie fuse of all tl»e wires were hurried
out. The wall was set on fire, but
fortunately Dr J. N. Nesbitt discover
ed the fire and extinguished the
bla/.e before any headway was made.
The damage amounted to about $10h.
Operator Mack Robbins no doubt

the time of the storm.
A Juvenile Party.
Miss Willie DeCamp tendered a
moonlight party last Friday evening
from 7:30 to 9:30 in honor of her
friend, Mis? Blanche Millersham, of
Charlotte, N. C., who has been visit
ing her for the past two weeks.
There wore about forty little folks
present anff tho indications are that
the evening was greatly enjoyed by
all who participated. Innocent games
wei- u indulged i n and dainty refresh
ments were served. Miss Miller-
ham returned to Charlotte yesterday
afternoon.
