Jun* 1 21.—As announc ed in our last letter the funeral ot Dr Thomas Beard Whitesides took place at Salem last Wednesday. The funeral exercises were conducted by Key. Mr. Derrick, of the Blacksburg M tt. church, assisted by Rev. Mr. Oates, of the Hickory Grove A. R. Presbyterian church. A very large congregation was present and the grav e was literally covered with (lowers as a token of tie* high esteem in which the deceased was held by his countrymen Mrs. Whitesides has the heartfelt, sympathies of this entire community ip her sore bereave ntent a s was shown so clearly at the funeral of her husband. Whitesides, of Hickory Grove, who is now in the eighty-second year of his age. He is hale and strong for one of his age. Mr. Whitesides told your cor respondent that it had been seventy years since h<* had iieen at Salem He remembers many of the old peo ple who used to worship there and to meet their children, grandchildren and great-iirandchildren was a source of much pleasure to him. More than fifty years ago he own ed and operated what is now known as Mercer’s mill, at the foot of Ninenty-Nine Islands on Broad river.
