The mayor’s matinee was slimly attended yesterday morning. Three unbleached Americans who had tank ed up on mean corn whiskey, and as a result proceeded to become hilarious and profane, were given ten dollars each or twenty days work. One other colored citizen forfeited his deposi : of $2 50 which he had placed In the hands of the police for his appearance. Mr. W. R. Jones, of Greensboro. N. C., arrived in the city Sunday night. Mr. Jones' comes to Gaffney as the special life insurance agent of the Gaffney Trust Company, He is a pleasant looking young gentleman and bids fair tjo make his mark. He and Charley Hanves should make a good team. The business of the Gaffney Trust Company is progress ing nicely. I n fact It has met the most sanguine expectations of Its promoters. Gaffney defeated Blacksburg Fri day in a game of ball which was featured by the unexpected hap pening. Gaffney was victorious by a score of 12 to 11. The large score is accounted for by the bad condition of the diamond and the practice both teams seemed to be in need of. The game was more exciting than the score would Indicate and several good plays were in , evidence. C. Byars, for Blacksburg, made a nice catch in left field while B. Byars, for Gaffney pitched in good form. Lip scomb caught a good game for Gaff ney while Bell’s hitting and fielding at first base, for Gaffney, were fea tures of the game. Board of Trade Meeting. A regular meting of the Gaffney Board of Trade will be held next Friday night, in the city hall. There will be matters of much importance to the business interests of Gaffney to come before the board at this meeting, and a full attendance of the members ig earnestly desired. Sec. and Treas. Office Mefchants and Planters Bank. Anothe r Veteran Gone. On the 27th of May, 1907, A. D. Lovelace, of Ezell, died at the home of his brother, J. m. Lovelace, with whom he had been residing for the past year. Mr. Lovelace joined the Southern forces in 1861 and served until he was wounded In the battle of Frazer’s Farm in ttye fall of 1864. H e belonged to Company I (Capt. W. D. Camp’s company) 5th S. C. regi ment. It Is said by bis comrades that he made a good soldier. He has now gone to join his great command ers, Lee and Jackson, on the other side of the river where all the sol diers will soon be mustered in. Married. Blackwell, of Spartanburg, was ia business visitor in the city yesterday. H. Y. Thackston. a prominent real estate man of Greenville, was a visitor in the city yesterday. Miss Bertha McLendon, of Tim- monsville, who has been the guest of Miss Jessie Lipscomb for two or three weeks, has gone to .Clemson College to be present at the commence ment exercises this week. Mrs. Senora Grey, of Gastonia, N. C., has been the guest of her sister, Mrs. j. h. Turner, for the past few days. Mxs. Grey is always a welcome visitor to the city.
