SENSATIONAL TURN IN THE MILLS CASE FULL TEXT OF MRS. MILLS’ AFFADAVIT. Mills’ Attorney Shows That Her Recent Communication Was Erro* neous. Editor of Ledger:—Mrs. Mills has seen fit to publish in your paper a statement in which she claims that your reporter did not correctly rep<. t the contents of the affidavit, which she maxie before me as notary public, and in which s^e makes statement conflicting therewith. In justice to the reporter, and to all parties concern ed. I send you the affidavit in full, which will sneak for itself, and which I shall be glad for you to publish. She adlmitted to another party at the time that the affidavit was cor rect. as I am able to prove. The facts stated and admitted by her iri the affidavit will at the trial be established bevond question by re liable witnesses. Very respectfully, J. C. Otta. Mav Zdth. 1907. The affidavit follows: State of South Carolina, Cherokee County. Court of Sessions. The State Against Wm. H. Mills, charged with murder. Personally comes Lola Mills, who first being duly sworn, says: That she is the wife of the said Wlm. H. Mills. That she was married to the said Wm. H. Mills, at Fairforest, S. C.. in Spartanburg county, on Au gust 25th, 1903, and immediately went with the said Mills as big wife to Atlanta. Georgia, where her hus band. Wm. H. Mills, was engaged in placing machinery in the Fulton Bag Cotton mills, and stayed there about six weeks; then deponent and her husband came to Gaffney, South Carolina, where her said husband > was engaged in placing machinery In the Limestone Cotton mills, and while in Gaffney, South Carolina, boarded with Rev. Mr. Hamrick and wife. They went from Gaffney to Reedy River. 8. C.. where her hus band was at work for a few days. Mr. Mills then went to Atlanta and deponent came to his mother’s. Mrs. Busbee’s. between Glendale andCllf* # ton. 8. C., for a few days. Deponent then went to Atlanta, where her husband was. Deponent and her bus- ^band then came to Mrs. Busbee’s and Mails was engaged in placing mar ooinerv tor the Converse Manufact uring company, at Glendale, S. C. They stayed there about seven weeks. The next job of work that Mr. Mills had was quite a short job and depo nent did not go with him, but stayed with his mother, and rejoined her husband at Gainesville, Ga., where deponent gave birth to their child, Mozelle. After Mr. Mills finished work at Gainesville, deponent and her husband and her child came to Grover, N. C. Mr. Mills was ordered to go to Draper shops, at Hopedale, Mass. Deponent wrote and corres ponded with Mr. Mills while he was In Hopedale. Mass. Mr. Mills went from Hopedale to Hartsville, S. C., but came by Grover, N, C.. to see de ponent on his way to Hartsville, S. C.; after he finished his work at Hartsville. S. C.. Mr. Mills went to Greenville, S. C.. but came by to see deponent at Grover. N. C. I^ater de ponent went to him at Greenville, 8. C. It was too expensive for depon ent to accompany Mr. Mills to every place he went, placing machinery, and often I did not go. but stayed with Mrs. Busbee. his mother, be tween Glendale and Clifton, S. C., or with my mother at Grover. N. C. Later Mr. Mills had work in Colum bus, Ga., and in Alabama. I went to him in Alabama, then later to New Orleans, where Mr. Mills was <mgag- ed for quite a while. While in New Orleans, our baby was quite sick and the physicians ad vised a change of climate, and I was broken down doing light housekeep ing. up stairs, and waiting on my child. Mr. Mills has always been y^cood to me in money matters and in all other respects except ho has been Insanely jealous of m*-. After I left New Orleans and went to Grover. N. C., the baby was quite ill. and Mr. Mills wrote me frequents Jy. twice a week: 1 did not write to him near so often. One reason was the baby was too sick, another was I did not have the time. Mr. Mills complained about my letters, and I wrote him a tart letter. ' Mr. Mills was in New Orleans for quite a whi’e having a large Job there for the Dnu per Manufacturing company, but he sent me money regularly for my own Ad our baby’s needs, including doc- ^Ar’s bills, etc. After baby got bet- *ter We had so much expense, that I wanted to make some money, so I taught a country school in Cherokee county, 8, C., near Grover, N. Q., but Mr. Mlllg objected, but I taught the school and when he got through at New Orleans he came by to see me at Blacksburg, and got a team and came out to Mr. Wylie's, where I boarded, to see me. He then went to Hickory, N. C.. where he had a lob of work tor the Draper Manu facturing company# He came back and spent Christmas with me at Gro ver, N. C.. and then returned to Hick ory. N. C., to finish up his work tor the Draper Manufacturing cpmpany. When he came back by way of Gro ver. he spent a night with me, and went to Greer. S. C., to place ma^ chinery in the Victor mills. I still staved at mv mother’s, and he came up to see me two or- three times while he was on the Victor Manu facturing company job. The last time Mr. Mills came my school was out. After my school was out, I did not want to go to Mr. Mills at Aragon, Ga.. until I could collect my school money. Having no diploma, I had to stand an examination to draw my go. I was angry and so was he. I wrote to a friend In Atlanta, and she secured me a position, and I left the next Thursday night, arriving there Friday morning. Mr. Mills came for me the next Monday, found me Tues day. and came back home with him Wednesday. We then went to board at the hotel at Pacolet. S. C., until he finished up his Job there. I told him all just before his work was fin ished at Pacolet. He was jealous, told me I had been intimate with Frank Deal; that he had the proof of it. and a great deal more. Finally I owned up to him. This enraged him terribly. He threatened to kill me and to kill himself, but we talked the salary. I stayed a portion of the matter over. The company offered time at Grover, with my mother, and the balance of the time at Blacks burg. S. C„ with my aunt, Mrs. Park er. While at Blacksburg. I worked some In a millinery shop and Frank Deal urged me to leave Mr, Mills, and go into the millinery business, saying that he would furnish me money to open up business with. This was after I stopped teaching school, and before I went to Mr. Mills at Aragon. Ga.. about the first of July, 1906. I may have been in discreet in dancing with some boys and young men in the country, while teaching school, but I meant no harm, and thought nothing of it. until tattlers told Mr. Mills about it. He did not seem to like it. Mr. Mills bought some land from my father, and a portion of the mon- I earned by teaching. |55, went to help pay for the land. While at Gaffney, to have my baby’s photos taken, and to be examined for a teacher’s certificate, etc., I stopped at Mr. Williams’ boarding house. I met Deal there, he was working at SHORT NEWS ITEMS OF LOCAL INTEREST. EVENTS IN GAFFNEY AND CHER. OKEE. Recent Happening! in and Arouiitf the City and Other Event! We left Pacolet on Friday even ing before Mr. Mills killed Mr. Frank Deal, but missed train No. 12 for Grover, N. C. As I did not wish to go on train No. 40, which did not stop at Grover. N. C. I went out to Mrs. Busbee’s and spent the night. leaving for Grover. N. C., next morning. Mr Mills going back to Pacolet to wind up affairs and settle with the men, who were working with him. He was to follow me and I expected him to com* to Grover Sunday or Monday morning. Deponent being advised that .the foregoing is such facts as are material for the purpose of this affidavit, saying no more at this time. Sworn to and subscribed to before me this 29th day of April, 1907. (Signed) Lola A. Mills. , J. C. Otts, (L. S.) Notary Public for S. C. the Gaffney mill, at that time, as I understood from him.
