Tho city park shows the recent beautifying It received and assumes a beautiful appearance. The telephone company has a number of men at work installing new poles throughout the cltv. Police circles of the city are quiet 1- 4 eed and nothing seems likely to appear to disturb their calm. All regular services are announced by the pastor. Rev. E. G. Ro§s for Draytonville Baptist church on, next Sunday. Messrs. J. V. Sarratt and J.’F. C.arrett are instituting attractive im provements at. their already beautiful residences. The magistrate’s courts of the city were a failure yesterday so far as contributing to The Ledger man’s store of news. Quiet ruled in all the courts. An unusual number of people could be seen on the streets all day yester day. All seemed on business bent and the day was a busy one among the merchants. A visit to the mayor’s court de veloped nothing yesterday. The sin ners had either reformed or post poned for a season, their desire to play a star part in his honor's stir ring drama. Owing to a recent action of the city council local merchants can now conduct the sale of Ice without a license. Heretofore It has been necessary to have a license to deal In It • A force of workmen are employed in making an addition to Sheriff Thomas’ part of the county jail. The genial sheriff needs room, not the prisoners, as room is at no premium wher^ the cells are. Announcement Is made of the post ponement of the dedication of the new church at Skull Shoals, from the 4th Sunday of this month to the 3rd Sun day in June. Pritchett on Jefferies and Pety street and win occupy it This is one of the most modem and beautiful resi dences in the city. “MV Wife's Family” at the Star Theatre last nlgnt. was presented in a satisfactory manner by a very cap able company. The comdey is filled with laughable and apt situations and it was thoroughly enjoyed. Supervisor Lipscomb Is making enquiries as to the cost of bridges both at Gaston Shoals and Stacy’s ferry. Nothing definite has been done but the enquiries will let the men know exactly what the cost will be. Cherokee county has two sons in the senior law class of South Caro lina university which was admitted as a whole to practice law in South Carolina a few days ago. ThOv are Messrs. W. C. Hughes and Marvin Hardin. The committee engaged In straight ening up the affairs of the county, continue at their work. A member when asked vesterday if they were through, laughed and answered in the negative, saving that the end was not yet in sight. Mr. A. C. Williams and Miss Lester Lemmons were married Wednesday evening bv Rev. E. G. Ross at his home. A number of friends of the contracting parties witnessed the ceremony. George Corry. who celebrated at Cowpens and was lodged In the Spar-1 tanburg Jail as a consequence, has I been released as a result of his fath- er. Dick Corry, acting as his bonds man. As a result of the two encount- ers he passed through, he was unable to be present at the hearing at Cow- 1 pens in his case and it was postnoned. J June is almost here and with June comes the closing of the colleges and schools. The students soon return 1 home to spend the summer. Gaffney contributes a large number of its young people to the various colleges j of this and other States and they are J all thinbing now of turning their faces homeward. Tom Byars, colored, hag had a charge filed against him of selling | liquor. Ha will have to explain his connection with the charge. In the , meantime he will probably lanquish in prison. This is an ill fated family, as Tom’s brother, Will, alias Mat, is his neighbor in the jail. His presence is accounted for by a charge of high way robbery. It was thought by the P&stor and congregation of the First Baptist urch that the meeting -'vw in pro gress at that church would have to close on yesterday but an unforseen change in the plans of Dr. T. T. Mar tin who is conducting the meeting, makes it possible for It to continue until this evening. Dr. Martin will le.hvG tomorrow morning for Union where he will continue his work. The program for the commence ment exercises of Limestone college Is nearing completion and to say a treat awaits the hundreds who will be in attendance expresses it mildly. Mixed with the addresses bv dis tinguished orators, many recitals by the different departments will lend charm to the week’s enjoyment. The first recital of the week tabes place on Tuesday night May 21st. The public schools of the city close today. Monday evening the com mencement exercises will be held with Prof. Clinkscales as commence ment orator. In addition to the ad dress by Prof. Clink-scales appropriate exercises will be rendered. The fol lowing will receive diplomas: Misses Elolse Potter, Christine Baker, Flossie Porter, Annie Kendrick and Messrs. Robert Darwin, Wm. Walk er. Douglas Westrope and Claude Fort The many friends of C. M. Little john and family will regret very much to learn that Dr. Littlejohn will dis pose of his property interests here and take up the practice of medicine at Starr. Anderson county. Messrs. Howard and Wlells Littlejohn are prominent business men of Starr. Dr. Littlejohn has practiced medicine in Gaffney for years and numbers his friends by the score. It will be a severe blow to the city to give Dr. Littlejohn and family up. Efforts are being made fo have a baseball game this week between Blacksburg and Gaffney but as yet the two teams have not been able to come to terms. It is probable, how ever. that the contest will be arrang ed and Gaffnev fans will see these ancient rivals in actual combat. A number of the baseball players of the city were limbering up at the pub lic school park Tuesday afternoon. The work was brisk and snappy and the men seemed to handle them selves well. » The Limestone college annual “The Calc! id." is just on the verge of is suing from the press.
