Ross, President. The Gaffney Trust Company wras organized last Thursday. The stock holders met in the office of the Nat ional Bank. J. C. Otts was called to the chair, and J. Eb Jefferies elected Secretary. It was accertained that 84 per cent, of the stock was present, and on mo tion, Messrs. E. P. Wharton, T. ii. Butler and Ed. H. Deftmp were ap pointed a committee on By-Law r s. Mr. E. P. Wharton explained the details, and answered the several questions. On motion the following gentlemen were eelcted as a board of directors: D. C. Rots, E. P. Wharton, J. C. Otts. J. D. Jones. J. A. Carroll, H. K. Os borne, J. N. Lipscomb, R. M. W’ilkins, N. Lipscomb. T. H. Westhrope, R. M. Gaffney. W. C. Hamrick-, Dr. C. A. Jefferies, J. Eb. Jefferies and C. M. Smith. Messrs. J. A. Carroll, N. Lipscomb and H. K. Osborne were appointed a special committee to secure quar ters. and arrange for business. The directors then completed or ganization. by electing D. C. Ross, president; J. N. Lipscomb, vice presi dent; C. W. Hames secretary and treasurer, and J. C. Otts, attorney. The committee to complete organiza tion. were instructed to report back to the board, at an adiourned meet ing at 4 p. m. at which meeting Messrs. Wharton and Osborne were appointed a committee to take up the matter of life insurance work. Messrs. N. Lipscomb. J. C. Ott? and H. K. Osborne were appointed a com mittee on finance and investments. The object of the company Is to do a general loan and trust business, life and fire insurance, to deal in real estate and to act as trustee of estate, etc. THE GOSPEL MEETING. It Was Commenced at the First Bap tist Church Sunday. Rev T. T. Martin, of Blue Moun tain. Miss., began a series of meet ings in this church last Sabbath morn ing. There were good congregations at the three services yesterday. Mr. Mlartin showed that he had traveled and had experiences enough with men of all classes to leave off all captrap methods and hit from the shouders. He preaches fearlessly and plainly but has a depth of feeling that reach es the human heart. He believes the Bible and that men are saved bv faith in Jesus Christ who is an alsuffiicient Savior. He teaches that faith in God is a manly act and that men should follow Christ because they love him. He has no series of invitations ti\,at amony men who want to hear and act for themselves, but calls them to confess Christ. His method of presenting truth is different from many, but it is fresh and striking and biblical. There was a quiet interest manifested from the first service and the attention the great con gregation gave him on Sabbath en courages the hope that our thought ful people will listen to the plain truth of God’s word and build their lives upon it. His illustrations aro fresh and many of them stir the nobler passions of the soul. Gaffne needs such preaching and we hope our people will stand by the meeting in every way thy can. The world needs truth that will make strong characters and Mr. Martin preaches a gospel that will make a strong true life. Off For Columbia. Misses Lucy Carpenter, sponcer. Edna Brown and Jessie Lipscomb have gone to Columbia to attend the old soldiers’ reunion. The old soldiers from Cherokee may well feel proud of the attractive and amiable voung ladies they have selected. Misses Carpenter and Lipscomb go from Co lumbia to Barnwell, where they will be entertained by Mrs. Jas. A. Willis, formerly of this city. Knows a Good Thing. The McKanna 3-day liquor cure people who have established a mod ern sanitarium at Reidsville. N. C.. evidently know a good thing. My Wife's Family. Under the alluring description of “Merry musical mixup,” “My Wife’s Family” is announced for the attrac tion at the Star Theatre Tuesdq^, May IGth. There is nothing sojious about this piece excepting its deter mination to give those who see it some new and good reasons for laughter. With this end in view Stephens and Linton, the authors, have taken the old and familiar theme of a henpeck ed husband with a wife who hasjnany relations who always visit her and with this framework they have done what would seem almost impossible— devised a play which has been pro nounced everyw-here to have all the elements of success, namely original ity and ginger. For the sake of vari ety. music and dance numbers haye been introdued. -nd the whole has been put into the hands of an exceed ingly capable company. Woll-knowm comedians, play the parts of tjfe young husband and tbo friend who is trying to help him get rid of his over friendly relatives, and they work in a lot of incidental comedy dialouge, as well as a deliciously ridiculous automobile and l>eep things moving every minute. Support is good throughout Marriage in Colored High Life. At tho home of the bride’^ parents, J. C. Smith and wife, on South Fred erick street. Sunday evening. Fannie M. Smith and Paul Petty, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. Rev. L. M. Mitchell ofii elating. The cere mony was witnessed by a few select friends of the contracting parties. The couple is regarded as among the 400 of the colored population of Gaff ney. The Sudden Shift. (Chicago Tribune.) Mr. Ferguson, two of whose down town friends had just dined with him. had taken them into the liljrary for a smoke. “I must tell you a good one on my wife.” he said. “She’s been roasting me because I look at the headlines in the papers once in awhile to see if anything important is happening in the Thaw trial. Well, the other afternoon, while the girl was away, she put a pan of biscuits in the oven to bake, and while she was waiting she picked up a paper and began to read the stuff herself.
