A Chinese Supper.
On the invitation of Miss Ada
Crocker a number of young ladies of
the missionary club of the First Bap
tist church assembled at her home on
Indian Hill to enjoy a Chinese slipper
last Thursday night. Everything was
in true Oriental style. Rev. and Mrs.
W. E. Crocker were attired in Chinese
costumes and the guests were com
pelled to eat with chop stiebs. Chon
suey was the principal dish. Op ac
count of the unfamiliarity with the
chop sticks there was more ripe op
the floor when the meal was finished
than anywhere else. The evening’s
pleasu -e was added to by recitations
by some of the guests. Mr. and Mrs.
Crocker sang in Chinese and Scotch,
much to the enjoyment of those, pres
ent.
First Baptist Church Notes.
There was a good Sabbath school
and two good services last Sabbath.
Dr. Simms announced a meeting to
begin next Sabbath fn which he ex
pects the help of Rev. T. T. Martin,
of Blue Mountain. Miss. Mr. Martin
is a f^e biblr* teacher and an inter
esting speaker. Beginning with next
Monday there will be a service each
day at 4 p. m. and 8 p. m. Get ready
to enjoy the services.
A special service next Sabbath at
3 p. m. when Mr. Martin will speak
on “The married life, its present day
perils and dangers.”
Come and bring your friends. There
will be a series of cottage Draper
meetings this week.
Before the Mayor.
Mayor Little had three sinners yes
terday morning, or would have had
throe had they all appeared, but two
preferred to forfeit their bond^
Wilkes Montgomery forfeited $10 Jno.
Graham forfeited $5, while Sank
Whittenburg stood ids trial and escap
ed with a fine of $1. Each of them
were up for disturbance.
Champion-Shirley.
M/r. Marshall Champion and Miss
Mary Shirlev. both of this place were
married at the home of the bride by
Rev. E. G. Ross Sunday evening at
7:15 o’clock. A large number of
friends and relatives were present to
extend thier congratulations.
Riilv Kersands’ Minstrels.
Billy Kersands’ Minstrel held the
iioards at the Star Theatre Saturday
night It was a fairly good show, but
nothing, extraordinary. The first part
was ratther uninteresting, but the
second part, or olio, was very good.

look closely after their drap pipes,
rear premises, etc. In conversation
with a Ledger man yesterday he said:
“I wish you would say to the people
of Gaffney that if they will take the
trouble to clean up their Premisee
and keep their back yards and other
places where waste water is thrown
liberally sprinkled with lime that it
will not only look better, but will con-
tribute a great deal to the healthful
ness of the city. It is unpleasant for
an officer to have to call on people
and inspect their premises at the
very best, but when he finds them
filthy and dirty and it becomes neces
sary for him to instruct them to clean
up. the burden becomes that much
harder. I would a great deal rather
call and find every thing in a neat,
cl an condition than otherwise, be
cause 1 can then go away feeling good
about the matter, whereas, if I h ave
to instruct that the premises be claam-
ed it makes it unpleasant. It is still
more unpleasant to have to arrest
anyone for neglect pf duty, and I dan’t
want to do it. but people must keep
their premises cliean if they want to
escape a lecture, and possibly a fine,
from the mayor.”

Acrpss Country in An Auto.
Last Friday afternoon Dr. W. K.
Gunter. Victor Lipscomb and Ed. H.
DeCamp were the guests of Harry C.
Wheat on an auto trip to Spartanburg
and return. The party left Gaffney
at 1:05 in Mr. Wheat’s touring car
and in one hour and thirty minutes
w r ere.in Spartaburg. The roads_.were
good and the machine went, along
without a hitch. Harry certainly, un
derstands piloting the car. He a
careful and painstaking driver and
exhibits doe regard for the teams he
meets on the road. The return trio
was made in about the same time.
It was a most pleasant outing, one
thoroughly enjoyed by the partici
pants.
Pension Money.
The pension money for 1907 has ar
rived and is now ready to be paid oht
by the clerk of court. All who cannot
call in person must send a written
order signed in the presence of a
witness. The total amount is $G,1_90,-
92 and classified as follows:

The Foiyc club gave a reception at
Limestone college last evenin'? in
honor of Misses Mary Durst, of Green
wood, and May Drake, of B^nnetLs-
ville. These young ladies are gra
duates of Limestone and are very'
popular with the students, the faculty
and the members of the Foiyc club.
The club, which is a college club, al-1
