Carpenter at her homo on Limestone street. Tuesday afternoon. The reception hall and large par lors were artistically decorated with cut flowers, and beautiful potted plants of the tropics. Shaded candles in silvered and crystal candelabra handsomely dressed women, continu ally coining and going, enchanting music delighting the ear. made a scene long to be remembered. Mrs. Carpenter was assisted in the delightful task of receiving her friends by Mrs. Landrum Brown, Mrs. Arthur Peeler and Mrs. Boyd Hames. Mrs. C. C. Humphries wel comed the guests at the door.* In the south parlor, decorated in the effective blending of white and green. Mrs. Carpenter with assist ance of Mrs! Landrum Brown receiv ed her guests. The north parlor was beautiful in lilac and white decorations. Surround ing the table containing the punch howl, exquisite flowers and plants were banked, forming a bower of beauty, and presided over by Miss Freeman Garrett, assisted bv several other members of the popular B. B. Club, all visions of youthful loveli ness. The dining room was attractive in pink and white, the color scheme be ing used In every detail. The maho gany table was draped with hand some hattenburg lace cover, over pink, with artistic centre piece of cut flowers and foliage. Roses were very much in evidence, not onlv in vases and urns, but peep ing over the top of mantle, ary) lying temptingly within reach of all. This popular room was in charge of Mrs. T. L. Brown, and Mrs. W. F. Br*wn, ably assi'ted by members of the B. B. Club, who gracefully served the tinted ices, cake and salted almonds. The singing of Mrs. J. L. Lightsey. Mrs. Charles Hames. Miss Myrtle Gaffney and instrumental numbers by Miss Jessie Lipscomb and Miss Lucy Carpenter, were enjoyable features of the afternoon Little Miss Sarah Carpenter pre sented each guest with an Easter no- veltv as a souvenir of this charming occaclon. Gaffney has been unusually gay this winter, one brilliant social event fol lowing another in such rapid succes sion that one can onlv hreathl-sslv wonder who will be the next to throw open their doors for the eniovment of the social world. A fatal shooting affair occured lust across the North Carolina line last Sunday afternoon at Ben Brad- lev's hoinp when Garfield Ross shot Ben B Rdley. using a breech loading shot gun. Bradley was shot in the right leg just above the knee. The limb was shattered so as to necessi tate amputation. Bradley died Mon day from loss of blood. The difficulty arose over Bradley’s wife. It seems that the woman is a half-breed while Bradley himself is also said to be of the same stripe. They endeavor to pass as white people. Ross is a ne gro. Ross escaped after the shoot ing and had not been apprehended a' last accounts.
