There is no use throwing a fit and ' getting hot under the collar with the commissioners. They are human and will not he frodded like an ox without resenting it. Argument must be used. The falsity of their position must bo made plain to them. The desire to treat others with con sideration lives in the breast of every honest man and most men if they are wrong and the way is made : plain to them will turn about and "'’rsue the right course. There is one course onen to the advocates of the bride, and that is, to continue to secure signatures to the petition and present it again to to the commissioners and thus re- ooen the case. With that end in view a petition will be presented to i every merchant and cosiness man In , Gaffnev and he will be requested to | secure sigatures to it so that the matter can ho presented to the com missioners at their next meeting. Hardin, of Blacksburg, was among the visitors to the city yes terday. A WARNING TO GAFFNEY. A press dispatch of March 29th read as follows; Perhaps the most disasterous fire that ever visited 1 Newberry occurred today. It was a ! spectacular and desperate fire. Five , full-sized citv blocks of buildings, were 'destroyed and parts of other! blocks went up in smoke. Newberry i has a very good fire department and she prides herself on her excellent ! water system, which can turu on over a hundred-pound pressure. It. also has a stand pipe that holds 280.- 0/0 ,,alloiia and offers a seventy- nound pressure, but when the erb is came today the water system fell down and the citizens had to stand I idly by and see their homes and property consumed. The fire depart ment thought it had the lire under control when the water failed. There ’ was no apparent cause. The fir men were helpless and when the flames shot across Fri-nd street and then worked from house to house on the block origin they were hopeless.
