That the new Chinatown of Snn 1 Francisco will be ns much of a show I place as the old one ns well ns a clean er, more picturesque uml Interesting quarter of the city, Is quite evident to any one who takes a stroll through that part of the city, writes a correspond ent of the Chicago Inter Ocean. On all sides there Is the greatest ac tivity In building. The structures that are being erected are. almost without exception, of a permanent character and superior In every respect to those that they replace. The length of Dupont street from California to Broadway Is for the most part already built up, and the build ings, most of which are rapidly nearing completion, are to be tenanted by Chi nese business firms that formerly did business In the quarter. All the leading venders of curios whose wares were so much In demand by the eastern tourists are locating In new and enlarged premises along Dupont street. The much prized ori ental bric-a-brac, much of It manufac tured to catch the eye of the eastern tourist, will be o« sale again as it was In the old days. One of the characteristic features of old Chinatown architecture—the green portico strung along the first and sec ond floors of the buildings—Is to be again In evidence. All the restaurants and joss houses will have elaborate porticos of this kind. A new Chinese theater Is to be constructed at the north end of Fish alley, and the wail of the Celestial orchestra will greet the wayfarer In this neighborhood once again. Already the woman with the powder ed face and the henna painted lips has returned from Oakland and taken up her abode behind the green Iron iat tlce In Bartlett alley. Here and there are the gaudy signs of gambling joints, open, although the population of the quarter has not yet arrived. It is evident that the word has been giv en by the authorities that gambling will be permitted to run wide open In the new Chinatown, for the elaborate construction that is being undertaken by property owners in that quarter with a view of accommodating the pro prletors of gambling joints would not be begun unless It was assured that these places would be permitted to run without police interference. The small merchant Is to establish himself again in the old locations. Even Fish alley is to be revived in all of its odoriferous glory. Several fine brick structures have been erect ed at the south end of the alley and more are under construction on both sides of the thoroughfare extendin: down to Jackson street. The dives along the street leading to the rhlnesc quarter from Kearney street have been rebuilt on a greater and more elaliorate scale than before, and they are all In operation, running without any interference from the po lice. These dens of vice promise to be more numerous in this section of the city than they ever were before Hundreds of thousands of dollars are being invested in buildings that are obviously being constructed for Immor al purposes, and the new tenderloin promises to be double the size of the old one. Waveriy place, Ross nil w and Baker alley are all being reconstructed with Imposing brick buildings. Many of these structures have steel frames and pressed brick fronts, but arrangements are being made for Chinese tenants, and most of the buildings will have the picturesque green porticos. Chinese cigar factories have already located In various places In the quar ter, and the Industry of manufacturing cheap smokes Is flourishing again. The old Chinatown guide who used to he so much in evidence around the hotel lobbies is busy exploring the new quarter and has located several dens where the poppy Jnlce^ Is cooked and smoked. TTio prospects are ffiat the Chinatown guide will find that his vocation Is an i.nprofltable one In the new Chinatown, for the old ramshac kle buildings through which he med to lead the way have all gone and will never be reconstructed.
