MR TILLMANS PERFORMANCES.
That the utterances of Senator
Tt'lman on the race question do not
meet with the -oproval of a great
many people of the South there is
no Question. Of course no one who
knows Mr. Tillman will take his ut
terances with seriousness. In fact
he does not himself believe what he
Mavs in regard to the negro. He is
talking not for affect but ef.ect—dol
lars. The Charlotte Observer of the

sectionalism is to be found on this
side of the old line. Senator Till

Senator Lodge, of Massachusetts, is

Th,: Ledger was the first paper to
appear with a full account of the
trial and conviction of Tom Harris.
The verdict, was rendered at G:30.
Judge Aldrich sentenced him at G:43.
At (‘>:4n the prisoner left the court
house, and at 8.35. one hour and fifty
minutes. The Ledger, bearing a full
account of the entire proceedings,
was rolling from the press. That’s
what, we call quick work in a country
nrintine- office.

We wish some of our Nprthern
friends who entertain the idea that
negro cannot ger justice from the
white people of tin* South could have
witnessed a scene in our court house
last. week. A negro (Victor Corry)
was being tried for house breaking
and larceny. He was too poor to em
ploy a lawyer, so he conducted his
own ease. The jury was composed
'' white men and every witness
arainst the negro was a white man
The negro had not a sing e witness. He
cross examined the witnesses, went
on the stand in his own behalf and
told his story and was acquitted
Now what have you to say about that,
so far as giving the negro justice is
concerned?

Whereas, the John Hames Chapter
U. D. C. of Jonesville have decided
to erect a monument ir the town of
Jonesville. S. C\. to the .soldiers of
Union countv in the war between the
Staris. and thev wish to procure a
full list of those who went from the
section then known as North Paco-
let. now a part of Cherokee county.
