The majority of the mills have two holi days, the Pt uud the 15th. In many mills the engine starts at G o’clock the morning ul iLe 2d and runs continu ously until 0 o'clock the morning of the 15th. then starts at 0 o’clock the morn- lug of the 10th and runs continuously until 0 o’clock the morning ot the 1st. This is as near perpetual motion as men and m. < Lines < an >tand. No stop is made for dinner, the hands taking thirty minutes for dinner in rotation and spare hands taking the place ot each band. Each operative works from 6 o’clock to 0 o’clock, with thirty min utes for dimier. and the night shift comes on at 0 o'clock. Thirteen to six term tweive-hour days on a stretch necessarily make the hands slower and less etlicient. Though they do not observe the Lord’s rein day, a good number of mills have by experience come to see the material g >od that comes from having one day in seven for rest, and one of toe largest groups of mills observes the -tth, 11th, 1 Mia am! 251h of ea< li month, but do not. as cus tomary with us. allow a third or half of tlx* previous day for rest also. The four rest days are utilized b; the i: an ageineut to overhaul and clean machin ery, check up results, instruct green hands in regard to their duties, etc. The national holidays «>f which (her'* arc about ten, are observed by th -- mills, so that even in the mills rnabin a practiee . f stopping only two days foi rest tlx* holidays etlect a stop of one or two more da\ per month. The hours of work and the number of rest days vary w ith the locality and the mill. Each mill has its own sys- mgh th - ..ether in some respects, through die Japaues'* Cotton t-p :,hits' association, in pub lishing comparative reports, etc., they are very jealous of each other and kc. p the details of their business, methods of operation, etc., a secret from other mills. This instinctive secrecy, as shown in other industrial lines, such as machine shops, shipbuilding, etc., has made the oliice of consulting engineer in Japan a very lucrative one, us new projects cannot copy from old. bntl: '' i' to call In expert advice to select the machinery, etc. A slight illustration of this occurred in my visit, oia suc cessive days, to two mills not over fif ty miles apart. The superintendent of one said a good many erroneous arti cles were printed about hours run by Japanese mills: that the great majority stopped thirty minutes for dinner and always had at least four rest days a month. J was in the other mill from 11:30.until 1 o'cl k and saw the meth od of using -paii* ham]- and making no stop for dinnei -d the superin- Having Fan With the Directory of the Big C:ty. .
