nesday night at the Star Theatre,
was very good indeed. The ■'york 01
the performers, notwithstanding the
poor house, was far above that of
the average one night stand com
panies playing in towns the size of
Gaffney. The fact that stout-hearted
people were moved to tears by the
realistic work of the actors and
actresses is sufficient to warrant us
in saying the worb was well done.
Its a Pity they did not have a larger
house. As we have had occasion to
say before, it seems that our people
are unable to diseriminate between
the good and the poor shows. We
hope to have this company h^re later
this season in repertoire.

Two hundred years ago the inhabi
tants of Oboramagau, a small village
in Bavaria, made a vow that if plague
which was then raging be lift-d they
would thereafter every ten years
perform in dramatic form the story
of Christ’s life and suffering. The
pleague at once abated and in conse
quence the peasants of that town
have made the name of Oberatnagau
famous the world over by their
wonderful production of the Passion
Plav or “ r ih: Life of Chrst.” every

lecture at the Star Theatre tomor

Next Wednesday night Gaffney
will have the opportunity of bearng
one of the most famous men in
America—Opie Read. Mr. Read is a
Southern man. a newspapei man by
profession, but. later developed into
an author and his books have made
him famous. Simply to give an idea
as to what he Is thought of as a
lecturer we give the following press
comments.
Opie Read is especially well known,
not only as an author and entertain
er. but as a newspaper man. he hav
ing been a leading writer on the
Chicago dailies for years. In South
ern and negro dialect he Is certainly
a master, and each of his numbers
along these lines was perfect in Itself,
while the encores that he responded
to were equally as good.—Steven’s

A,large audience, composed of the
best citizens, assembled last evening
to hear Opie Read, the novelist and
story-teller. The distinguished gen
tleman was given a hearty welcome.
The entertainment w f as delightful all
the way through, and the audience

definitely postponed on account of
the illness of one of the young ladies
in the cast Announcement will be

A Small Fire.
The fire alarm sounded Wednes
day at 11:40 and the fire department
responded promptly. The building
on fire was the five room cottage be
longing to Mr C. W. Durham, locat
ed at 1130 Limestone street, and
used as a dwelling by Mr. Durham.
Fortunately the fire was discovered
early, and while the roof of the house
was completely destroyed, still the
prompt work of the fire department
saved the main part of the building.
Almost all the furniture was remov
ed. hence was not damaged by fire.
The damage is conservatively esti
mated at $200, with no insurance.
Officer Henry Lockhart started out
with a petition yesterday morning
soliciting funds with which to assist
Mr. Durham to repair his house. Mr.
Durham Is getting up in years and
being a man In humble circumstances
the loss fell quite heavily on him.
