to Senator Gallinger on the Child
Labor Question.
Washington. .Ian. :il.—In discuss
ing his correspondence with Gov. An
sel ,of South Carolina, relative to the
United States soldiers being sent, to
Beaufort from Fort Screven, Senator
Tillman stated his position to several
newspaper men yesterday. He was
prompted to call the Governors atten
tion to the case to escape such a pre
cedent being established in South
Carolina. From the first accounts
published it appeared that soldiers
were appealed to to queel negroes who
were rioting and over-aweing the
town The later accounts show that
the troops were there to assist in
checking and extinguishing a fire
that was raging. It was not the liir
t'-ntion of the Senator to interfere
with the business of ti e State’s chief
executive; he was merely striking a
warning note of the predicament
South Carolina would he in when a
race war begun. Knowing the temp
er of the President of the United
States and his attituce towards the
shows that Col. Patterson acted la
the matter on his own authority.

regulation.
Senator Gallinger. at this point, in ,

that millions of Northern money had ,
been invested In South Carolina, and |
remarked. “God help South Carolina,
if tis mon v should he withdrawn ” j
Senator Tillman immediately arose

help of God for South Carolina, if
there was not Northern money there.
If you will consult the records and
make a conservative estimate, you
will discover that South Carolina has
contributed more than $82,000,000,
since and including 1865, to the pay-
