' i THE LEDGER. Tuesday and Friday, Ed. H. DeCamp. Editor and Publisher. A NEWSY limn FROM WIIKINSVUE. CINCINNATI PEOPLE EXCITED. PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS. A CLEAN CITY CLUB, > i* the fashion these days to have MOVEMENTS OF THE PEOPLE OF Cleaa City Clubs,” and “Beautiful Home Clubs,” etc. They are real good things and add to the health and eonafort of the people. On this sub ject we clip from an exchange: k practical outcome of the recent ■utTement for a clean city with Its at tendant enlistment of Interest on the *»rt of the school children is the or- gaair.ation of the “Clean Citv Club,” with a button, such as a child dearly loTes to wear, as its distinctive badge. •ays the editorial voice of the Chica- *o Tribune. It is a'suggestion from the Hull House, and seems to have lowr simple rules as Its constitution. Pick up at least one piece of paper trern the street every day Clean your own back yard and porches, and trv to interest the boys and girls next door. Keep at least one flower in the window. tBe smiling and clean yourself. Vhe idea is reported to be so popu lar that the newly organized corps of workers hopes to have a membership of 1,000 by the end Qf its first week. In a friendly contest held under its auspices between groups each with its own captain a good deal of interest on the part, of older people was de veloped. In every attempt of this sort which appeals to the children the education al value is more important th_an th--> actual accomplishments in manual labor For the hoy who picks up one paper a day soon forms a habit of re fraining from throwing anv naner on the street, and. with the peculiar cen- «nr® of children which is usually ef fective. he teaches his companions to tab*! pride in the same cleanliness ■which he advocates and illustrates. For this r°ason the Clean City Club deserves the heartiest commendation and encouragement. With a little wise direction from parents who are interested in the various imnrove- ment societies of the city the organiz ed army of children might he made a most efficient, aid to those w r ho are glvin- their timo and attention to the nhysioal cleanliness of Chicago. What is good for Chicago would be *pod for Gaffney, and we would sug gest that the best way to organize a "Clean City Club” would be to begin by organizing the children In the graded schools. With a very little I #Mr work on the part of each individual, e ‘ much could be done to keep Gaffney clean and beautiful. Let the town place receptlcals for waste paper, etcr at proper intervals and the “Clean City Club'’ will help lighten the bur den of the scavenger carts. LOWER CHEROKEE. Personal Paragraphs Concerning Pop ular People and Short Items of that Section. Wilkiusville. Jan. 28.—We notice in the Southern Presbyterian that Rev. Wm. H. White, late pastor of Salem church, changes his address from Richmond to Minter, Ala.. R. F. D. No. 1, his residence remaining the same. At an imprompter meeting of the congregation at Salem last Sabbath it was decided to confer with the Lime stone church at Gaffney and make a call for a minister. Nothing, how ever, was done further than to agree to take steps at the earliest moment to effect this project. The name of Rev. Will Hoffman, of Bowling Green, was mentioned as the most available and acceptable man there was any nrobabinty of getting just now. He is a member of Bethel Presbytery and an excellent minister. He assisted Rev. W. H. White at Salem year be fore last, 1905. Mr. J. G. Garner speaks of putting up a saw mill and cotton gin at the Thomson mill foY the next crop. Mr. W. G. Fowler is getting along very well, but not able to do any work yet. We made a trip to th*Vfork of Paco- 101 and Broad river last. week. Mr. Lester Blackwell got hurt last week by a plow handle hitting him in the side. He thinbs some of his ribs were broken by the lick. Postoffice Inspector Roberts, who went dver this R. F. D. route last week, agrees to recommend service on the road from W. R. Waker's place W. C. Kirby’s in case the patrons of the route will put the road in good order for travel, but not otherwise. One of Mr. Thos. Millwood’s child ren is sick. Thev think it is taking pneumonia. Several parties killed hogs during the cool snap last week. Next Sabbath. February 3rd, will be “ground hog day.’’ Mr. Reubin -Icn-1 kins used to say that as far as the sun shines in the house that dav the snow will blow before the winter ends. Our readers can note this pre The Great Cooper as he is Called Has Stirred up That City to a Remark able Degree. » Cincinnati. O., Jan. 31.—This city is at nresent in th" 1 midst of an ex citement beyond anything that it ex perienced jn recent years. Old and young, rich and noor, all seem to have become beside them selves over an individual who was a stranger to Cincinnati up to two weeks ago. The man who has created all this turmoil is L. T. Cooper. President of the Cooper Medicine Co., of Dayton, Ohio, who is at pres°nt introducing his ".-pnaration In this city for the first time. Cooper is a man about thirty years of age and has acquired a fortune within the nast two years by the sale of some preparations of which he is the owner. Renorts from eastern cities proceed ed the young man here were of the most startling nature. Many of the leading dailies going so far as to ^tate that he had nightly cured in nubile places deafness of years’ stand ing with one of his preparations. The nhysicians of the East contradicted this statement, claiming the thing to be impossible, but the facts seemed to bear out this statement that* Coop er actually did po. In consequence people flocked to him by thousands and his prepara tions sold like wildfire. Many of these stories were regard ais fictitious in Cincinnati and until Cooper actually reached this city lit tle attention was paid to th^m. Hard iv had the young man arrived, how ever, when he beean giving demon strations, as he calls them In nubile, and daily met people afflicted with deafness and with a single application of one of his preparations actually made deaf people hear again. In addition to this work Cooper ad vanced the theory that stomach trou ble is the foundation of nine out of ten diseases and claimed to have a preparation that would restore the stomach to '’ ■'rking order and thus eet rid of such troubles as rhematism Mrs. J.
