A Narrow Escape,
What came near proving a fatal ac
cident occurred at the Gaffney Manu
facturing Company’s plant Friday.
It is the custom to clean the big driv
ing wheel of the engine everv Friday
at noon. The wheel measures twen
ty-eight feet in diameter, and weigns
one hundred tons. In order to clean
the wheel it is necessary for work
men “to get down into it.” The cus
tom is to get into the wheel as soon
as the engine is stopped for dinner.
On Friday the workmen were ready
!o clean the wheel and it was stop
ped, but it had not stopped where
Engineer John Motts wanted it to
.stop, so he opeml the throttle to
shove it over. Russel Petty, one of
the men who was to do the cleaning,
jumped into the wheel, not knowing
that the engineer was going to turn it
half round, and when it began to
move became frightened and tried
to jump out through an opening in
the ?>it. His body was caught be
tween a beam and the wheel and the
hack and bowels mashed to a con
siderable extent. No bones were
broken, however, and Dr. Daj*win. the
attending physician, told a Ledger re
norter that while Russell would bp
v^-v sore for several davs if the in
ternal injuries were not more serious
than he thought they were he would
be out in a couple of weeks.
