The kidneys are your
blood purifiers, they fil
ter out the waste or
impurities in the blood.
If they are sick or out
of order, they fail to do
their work.
Pains, achesandrheu-

blood, due to neglected
kidney trouble.
Kidney ’rouble causes quick or unsteady
heart beats, ond makes one feel as though
they had heart trouble, because the heart is
over-working in pumping thick, kidney-
poisoned blood through veins and arteries.
1. used to be considered that only urinary
troubles were to be traced to the kidneys,
but now modern science proves that nearly
all constitutional diseases have their begin
ning in kidney trouble.
If you are sick you can make no mistake
by first doctoring your kidneys. The mild
and the extraorunary effect of Dr. Kilmer's
Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy is
soon realised, it stands the highest for its
wonderful cures of *he most distressing cases

CHAPTER VIII,
The Mansion of a Gentleman an^. a
Scholar.
The site of the Dove Cote was emi
nent v picturesque. It was an area of
level ground, containing, perhaps, two
aer s. on the summit of a hill that,
on one side, overhung the Rockflsh
river, and on the other rose by a gen
tle sweep from the champaign eoun
try b* low. This summit might have
been as much as two hundred feet
above the lied of the stream, and was
faced on that side bv a bold, rocky
precipice, not absolutely perpendicu
lar. but broken into stages or plat
forms, where grassy mould bad acctt
rutilated, and where the sweet-brier
and the laurel, and clusters of azalea,
shot up in profuse luxuriance. The
fissures of the crag had also collected
their handful of soil and gave nourish
ment to struggling vines, and every
where the ash or pine, and not infre
quently the dogwood, took possession
of such spots ulion the rocky wall, as
these adventurous and cliff loving
trees had found congenial to their na
lure. The opposite or northern bank
of the river had an equal elevation,
and jutted forward so near to the oth
er as to leave between them a cleft,
which suggested the idea of some
sudden abruption of the earth in
those early paroxysms that geologists
have deemed necessary to account fofc
some of the features of our conti
nent Below was heard the ceaseless
brattle of the waters, as they ran
over and amongst the rocks which
probably constituted the debris form
ed in the convulsion that opened this
chasm. It was along through this ob
scure dell that the road, with which
my reader is acquainted, found place
between the margin of the stream and
the foot of the rocks. The, general
aspect of the country was diversified
by bigs knolls and broken masses of
mountain laud, ami the Dove Cote it
self occupied a station sufficiently
above the surrounding district to give
it a prospect, eastward, of several
miles in extent. From this point the
eye might trace the valley of the
Rockflsh. by the abrupt hillsides that
hemmed it in. and by the growth of
sombre pines Uiat coated tiie steeps
where nothing else could find a foot
hold. Not far below, in this direc
tion. was to be seen the Fawn's tower,
a singular pinnacle of rock, which

of the cliff, so as to occupy the en
tire diameter of the semicircle, per
haps one hundred and fift ’ feet,
sorted by its simplicity of costume,
if 1 may so speak, and by. its tidy
beauty, with the close-shaven grass
plot and its trim shades.
Above the whole, flinging their
broad and gnarled arms amongst the
chimney tops, and forming a pleas
ing contrast with the artificial embel
llshments of this spot, some ancient
oaks, in primeval magnificence, rear
ed their time honored trunks, and no
less sheltered the habitation from the
noon tide heats, than they afforded
an asylum to the ringdove and his
mate, or to the countless travellers
of the air that here stopped for rest
or food.
Such was the general aspect of
the Dove Cote; a spot where a philo
sopher might glide through life in
unbroken contemplation; where a
wearied statesman might betake
himself to reassemble the scattered
forces of intellect for new r enter
prises; where the artist might repair
to study with advantage the living
graces of God's own painting; and
where young beauty might bud and
bloom amongst i he most delicate and
graceful forms of earth.
The interior of the dwelling was
capacious and comfortable. Its fur
niture, suitable to the estate of the
owner, was plain, and adapted to a
munificent rather than to an osten
tatious hospitality It was only In
the library that evidence might be
seen of lar^? expense. Here, the
books were ranged from the floor to
ceiling, with scarcely an interval, ex
cept where a few choice paintings
had found space, or the bust of some
ancient worthy. One or two ponder
ous lounging chairs stood in the
apartment; and the footstep of the
visitor was dulled into silence by the
soft nap of (what, in that dav, w-as
a rare and costly luxury) a Turkey
carpet. This was in all respects an
apartment of ease, and it was pro
vided with every incentive to beguile
a student into silent, and luxurious
communion with the spirit of the
sages around him,— whose subtlest
thoughts and holiest breathings,
whose most volatile fancies, had been

The sleeping sickness long known

DAUGHTER OF C. W. FTUMP
Mrs. C. W. Stump of Canton, Ohio,
writes: "i wish I could induce every
mother who has a weak, sickly child
to try that delicious cod liver prepar
ation, Vinol. Our little daughter was
pale, thin and sickly.
“We tried various medicines, but
without any benefit whatever, and
rlie could not take* cod liver oil or
emulsions, as they nauseated her and
upset her stomach.
* Learning that Vinol contains all
the medicinal and strength-creating
properties of cod liver oil, but with
out the disagreeable oil, we decided to
try It. and the results were marvel
ous so quickly was she restored to
health and strength.
“We have never sold a medh Ine
•qual to Vinol for delicate children.
