that he would have to pay up or he
would shoot bis heart out. Chavis
could not pay and he was first ejected
from the house and was then shot
through the breast by Clemens, the
weamm used being a shotgun.
As soon as the tragedy was known
in Springfield, magistrate A. B. Cor
bett hurried to the scene of the mur
dor tu hold the inquest, where he im
mediately empanelled a jure and the
following verdict was soon rendered:
“Tiney Chavis was killed in cold
blood by a shotgun in the hajids of
Stephney Clemens.”
Considerable excitement reigned in
the neighborhood of the shooting
throughout the remainder of the day.
It was reported that Clemens had left,
hut he was arrested near his home
about 5 o’clock in the afternoon.
Officials, realizing the danger of Clem
ens being taken from them and being
lynched, hurried along with him to
Springfield. At one time a party of
several overtook them and attempted
to get hold of Clemens, but they did
not succeed. Clemens, however, was
beaten over the head by the mob b<*-
fore they turned back. A number of
threats were made about their re
turning to this place at night with a
larger party to lynch the negro. The
officials decided after reaching here
that the best thing to do was to get
the murderer out of town on Bn* first
train: so when the southbound train
arrived at S odock he was spirited
away {y BarnweU where he was lodg
ed in jail for safe keeping.
Chavis has always lived in this (
neighborhood. He was of small '
means, has not a very savory reput a

scrapes in his life.
