THE NAZARENE.
Now when Jesus was born in Beth
lehem of Judaea in the days of Herod
ttin kins, behold, there came wise
men from the east to Jerusalem,
8 Saying. Where is he that is born
King of the Jews for we have seen
fci.s star in the east, and are come to
worship him. •
3 When Herod the kim: had heard
these thinKB. he was troubled, and
all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when he had gathered all the
chief priests and scribes of the peo-1
f>!e together, he demanded of them
where Christ should he born.
o And tli°y said unto him, In Bethle
Item of Judaea: for thus It is written
bv the piophet.
C And ihou Bethlehem, in the land
of Juda, art not the least among the
firinces < f Juda: for out of thee shad
come a Hovernor, that shall rule m>
people Israel.
7 Then Herod, when he had privily
called the wise men, inquired of them
diligently what time the £tar ap-
pc ired.
8 And le sent them to Bethlehem,
and said, do and search diligently for
the young child; and when ve have
found him, bring me word again, that
I may come and worship him also.
9 When they had heard the king,
they departed; and, lo, the star,
which iliey saw in the east, went be
fore them, UU it came and stood over
where the young child was.
10 When they saw the star, they re
joiced with exceeding great joy.
11 And when they were come into
the house, they saw the young child
with Mary his mother, and fell down,
and worshipped him: and when they
bad opened their treasures, thev pre
sented unto him gifts; gold, and
frankincense, and myrrh.
12 And being warned of God In a
d'-eam that thev should not return
to Herod, they departed into their
own country another way.
13 And when they were departed,
behold, the angel of the Lord ap-
peareth to Joseph in a dream, saying,
Arise, and take the young child and
his mother, and flee into Egypt, and
be thou there until I bring thee
word: for Herod will seek the young
child lo destroy him.
14 When he arose, he toob the
young child and his mother by night,
end departed into Egypt:
15 And was there until the death of
Herod: that, it might be fulfilled
which was spoken of the Lord by the
prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I
called my son.
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he
was mocked of the wise men, was ex
ceedlng wroth, and sent forth, and
slew all the children that were in
Bethlehem, and in all the coasts
thereot, from two years old and un
der, according to the time which he
had diligently Inquired of the wise
men.
17 Then was fulfilled that which
wa-s spoken by Jeremy the prophet,
saving.
18 In Rama was there a voice heard,
lamentation, and weeping, and great
mourning, Rachel weeping for her
children, and would not be comfort
ed, because thev are not.
19 But when Herod was dead, be-
ho d. an angel of the Lord appeareth
in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.
20 Saying, Arise, and take the
young child and his mother, and go
into the land of Israel: for they are
d ad which sought the young child’s
life.
21 And he arose, and took the voung
child and his mother, and came Into
the land of Israel.
22 But when ho heard that Arche-
!aus did reign in Judaea in the room
of his father Herod, he was afarid
to go thither: notwithstanding, being
warned of God in a dream, he turned
aside into the parts of Galilee:
23 And he came and dw'elt in a city
called Nazareth: that it might be ful
filled which was spoken by the proph
ets. He shall be called a Nazarene.
—Matthew 2: 123.

OUR HOLIDAY.
As is the custom of The ledger
we shall take a short holiday next

night and will not be open again for
the transaction of business until
Thursday morning. This will give
the force a much needed and well
I earned rest, and they deserve It.
Every attachee of the ollice lias been

it. is in the heart of humanity to be
loyal. All of us have our shortcom

the loyalty of the empoyees of The

and seem to be tireless. Some of the |

NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Do you realize how much tax you
pay on your buggy, your wagon, your
harness or vour stock by reason of
bad roads? Better pay that tax into
the countv treasury and have good
roads. The tax would be less, be
sides, you have the pleasure of using
the good roads.

How many farmers are there in
Cherokee who study farming from a
scientific standpoint? Wo know
there is a lot of difference between
scientific farming on paper and nrac
tioal farming, but the wise farmer
mixes the two and thus obtains the
best results. Are you a wise farmer?

For some time we have had it in
mind lo say that Gaffney is almost
entirely too wrapped up in her own
business affairs for her good. It is
true that we are not throu-h build
ing our owj city yet, and that we are
all hustling for Gaffney, but we must
remember that iht re are other nlaces
in the country that require some at
tention at our hands if we are to re

fit by their development. Let us re
member that no part of the country
can develop without it benefitting us,
therefore, when the opportunity pre
sents itself wo should try to do some-
tiiing to benefit. soxn*e other portion
of the country besides Gaffney. What

every energy to get out a job and
some fellow comes in and swells up |

work is not done. We have done our
best, but overrated our capacity. The
other fellow wants his work and
should have it. The fault is ours be
cause we should not have promised

worked our fingers off and our eye

Back to the subject—Christmas
times. The hoys need the rest, and
we suspect some of our readers, too.
Wo wish you all, young and old,
great and small, white and black; a
merry Christmas, and trust that
Father Time will deal gently with
you. and that prosperity may smile
on you during 1907. Remember,
however, that you yourself can do
much to bring about these blessings
we have wished ycu by being pru

ous, courteous and kind. The gods

themselves.
There is more Catarrh in this section of the
country than all other diseases put together,
and until the last few years was supposed to
be incurable. For a great many years doc
tors pronounced it a local disease, and pre
scribed local remedies, and by constantly
failing to cure with local treatment, pro
nounced it Incurable. Science has proven
catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and
therefore requires constitutlonol tr-atmnt.

we mean to say more particularly is
this: “if the people of Blacksburg,
Cherokee falls, Wi kinsville. Thick
fly, or Grassy Fond should attempt
some Kind of an enterprise and offer
stock to the people of Gaffney then
it would be we.l for those who can
do so to tal:-e some of the stock.”
We realize that every man 1 Gaffney
is bending every energy toward build
ing Gaffney, and this is proper, but it
would not bo amiss to lend some, as

so to do.
For the Sake of Morals.
(Durham Sun.)
The case of George Hasty, the
brute who killed the two showmen in
Gaffney, S. C. several months ago
will come before the Supreme court
of South Carolina this week. We
hope, for the sake of morals, he wil.
to serve everv day of his sentence in
the penitentiary. He should have
been hanged for his brutish crime.
If such a step had been taken we are
hound to believe that our sister state
would have been much better off, fi
