A BRILLIANT EVENT. The Crystal Weddinn of Dr. and Mrs. Darwin. One of the most brilliant social events of the season was the Crystal weddinK anniversary of Dr and Mrs. John Thomas Darwin on Wednesday evening. December 5th Their beautiful home was a scene of gaiety and splendor, the decora tions In pink and white. Candlebras filled with pink and white candles, while myriads of tiny lights threw a soft glow over all. The receiving party was composed of Mr. and Mrs. Darwin. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Thomas, of Spartanburg, and Miss Mary Whitesides of Blacks burg. Mrs. Darwin was gowned In cream silk, beautifully hand painted in pink roses. Mrs. Thomas in sil ver grey silk and Mls« Whitesides in black glib and lace; the gentlemen in conventional black The young ladles assisting were Misses Bessie Kendrick, Lillian Wood. Ixmise Sar- ratt. Mat Simmts, Annie Johnson, Nell Wood, Edith Fort, Edith Ross, f^ulie Potter. Pearl Crawley, Esther 'Ctoudfcloek and Ijeila Darwin and Edna Darwin. The hall was festooned in pink and white beneath which delicious punch was served. A two course lunch was served in a dining hall glittering in crystal emblematic of the occasion; after which the guests were asked to register their names. The latter part of the evening was given to the young folks. On a cen ter table surrounded by pink- and white candles was a cake of for tune from which the young guests cut an insight Into the future, all went as merry as a marriage bell un til the unlucky thimble came to view then of course one young lady miust be the old maid. Tiny dream favors tied in pink and white rib bons were given to every guest and the evening will long be remembered by all who were present. The popularity of Dr. and Mrs. Darwin was shown by the glittering array of beautiful cut glass number ing nearly two hundred. Dr. and Mrs. William Anderson, Dr. and Mrs W. E. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. T. V. Mays, Mrs. Will King, Mrs. Otis Osberne, Misses Mary Whitesides. Leila Darwin and Edna Healan, of Blacksburg, Mf E. D. Darwin, of Smyrna, Mrs. Perry, of Honea Path and Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Thomas, Mrs. David Johnson, Miss Edna Darwin and Mrs. S. A. Darwin, of Spartanburg, were the out of town guests. D. C. Little and City Attor ney Bell are back home after a trip to Florida, where they were the guests of Mr. Bell's brother, William Bell. J. B. has a new stock of Mokes and J. Q. is full of reminiscen ces of the trip. They both report a glorious time, but say that while the Land of Flowers is great the Piedmont is greater. The flrst number of the Star Course begins tonight at the Star Theatre when Guy Carlton Lee. Pb. D. LL. D., will deliver his lecture on “The Man of Sorrows.” The manage nlent. has every reason to believe that this is one of the very beet at tractions In the entire course. The style of entertainment is one that will appeal to the best in mankind, and no one can hear this lecture without being benefitted thereby. Dr. Lee will arrive on the South era's train. No. 12 in the afternoon The lecture will begin promptly at 8 o’clock. This is done to avoid ke ip ing the people away from home too late. All those holding season tick ets will please call at the Cherokee Drug Co’s, store today and have their seats reserved. In case you do not get your seats reserved during the day call at the box office and get councils for your seats. The indications are that the audi ence tonight will be one of the larg est and best that has yet assembled in the theatre. Found Dead in Bed. Mr. Henry Byar •. son of Mr. Geo. Byars, was found dead in his bed at his home Wednesday morning. Mr. Byars had been complaining several days but was not even confined to his bed. Tuesday he took some med icine and Tuesday night retired ear ly, at the same time he complained of feeling unwell, but there were no alarming symptoms. One of his children slept in the bed with him that night. Wednesday morning Mrs. Byars went to arouse him and was horrified to find her husband dead. Death had stole In so softly and easily that there was not suffl clent struggle to awaken the slop ing child that lav by his sid- Mr. Byars was a man of. humble station, but one who bore a good name. He leaves beside his aged father, a brother, his wife and sever al children to mourn their loss. He was about fifty years of age. The fu neral took place yesterday Rev. G. P. Hamrick officiating. The inter ment took place at Oakland Ceme tery. Lecture at Corinth. Rev. W. E. Crocker will lecture at Corinth on the second Sabbath In on the second Sunday in December both morning and evening.
