He was a Southern man by birth, a Southern man at heart, and although his greit inter ests carried him to the monev center of America—New York—still ho n vor ost his devotion for his native land. He had accomplished more to ward developing the great resources of this Southland than any other sin gU; man. ami yet he on y lived to got a peep at the wonderful -sibili tics that lay before us He had mapped out great things for bis railroad and he was fast executing those plans. It is to he honed that hi<- untimely death will in no wise re tard the work that he had planned. It is only right and proper that we attempt to pay tribute to his memo ry. He was an extraordinary man and accomplished much in the time allotted to him on earth. His sad end is to he deplored The South needed his services. The Ledger’s subscription list has been going forward by leans and bounds for the past two weeks until now it is larger than ever before in its history. We want more, however, and will continue to strive to merit them. * * • Gaffney is being confronted with a problem in the shape of ample wa ter supply and paved streets and sewerage. We should think the best thing to do is to issue $100,000 or $150,000 worth of bonds and see that Mr. L. L. Motte Married. The many friends of Mr. Leon L. Mott who reside in Gaffne will read with pleasure the following i from Sunday’s Spartanburg Herald: Mr. Leon L. Motte was married lust night to Miss Josephine Lawra- i «<>n at the home of her mother. Mrs. Maltimer Lawrason, No. 413 North j Church street. The ceremony was performed at 8 o’clock in the pres j once of the immediate family of the ’ ■’ and a few friends, by Dr. J. S. Watkins, of the First. Presbyterian church. The marriage of Mr. Motte and Miss Lawrason came as a complete surprise to their many friends in S artanburg. So far as the general public was concerned the marriage was a surprise and the cause of much interest last night. Mr. Motte has for several years been the court stenographer of the Fourth Judicial District and has many friends in Spartanburg.
