Recent Happenings in and Around th* City and Other Events Gather ed by the Local News Editor. Cotton is selling at 11 cents on the local market today. The Ledger is informed that the new depot will be opened to the pub lic on December the 1st. Will Darby returned last night from Union, where he has been for several days manipulating Editor Rice’s lin otype. Little Miss Edith Broom, of Lime stone Mills, is in a fair way to win the big doll offered by The Ledger. She has already brought In ten new subscribers to The Ledger so far. John Allison lias purchased from James Coyle a house and lot in the northern section of the city. x He moved into it yesterday. He also pur chased the house next to it from Mr. Morgan. The Ladies Bazarr. at the old Par- ish hoi el on December 7th, gives promise of being the biggest thing of the kind ever attempted in Gaffney. It is for the benefit of the library and should be liberally patronized. Sunday afternoon some miscreants tore the bottom off of a slot machine containing tobacco, In front of The B. B. Store, and rified the contents About sixteen packages of tobacco and a few nickles were stolen from the box. Union Thanksgiving services will be held in the First Baptist church on Thanksgiving day. Rev. Mr. liston. of the Presbyterian church, will preach the sermon. Rev. Mr. Harper will not be able to be present, as he will be at. Columbia on that day in atendance on the conference. Manager O. A. Osborne, of the Blacksburg opera hous« announces the appearance in that city on Thurs day. Friday and Saturday, November 29th, 30th and December 1st. of the Southern favorites, the Rhodes Brat ton Co., presenting high class vaude ville. Manager Osborne believes In giving his patrons the best attractions possible and we hope he will be lib erally patronized. The Engagement Ended. The Williams Comedy company closed its engagement at the Star Theatre Saturday night, with “The Bowery Girl.” The entire cost was efficient. Of course there were a lot of absurd situations, but that was in tended and expected. The Williams Comedy Co., to use a slang phrase, “made good.” It will Interest Gaff ney people to know that Mr. DeGaff erelly, the leading man and manager, is a native South Carolinian His home is in Charleston and he spends the summer there every year. Each and every member of the company conducted themselves in proper style while here, and made many personal friends. Mr. DeGafferelly’s little cur tain talk Saturday night was of a personal nature, but It had the true ring about it and when he said he was glad he had come to Gaffney and sor ry to have to leave, everybody be lieved he spoke from his heart. The company did a very nice business while here. His Last Sermon at Providence. .. Rev. F. C. Hickson requests The Ledger to announce that he will not be able to keep his appointment Sat urday at Providence, but that he will be there Sunday and preach his fare well sermon. Mr. Hickson has served the people of Providence fearlessly and faithfully and there Is nothing but universal regret that he is going to leave us. The post office will observe Sunday hours, the banhe will be closed, the graded school will suspend for the day, and the business houses generally will observe the day.
