NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The Standard Oil Trust does not
se?m to mind being prosecuted as It
hires its lawyers for a term of years
and Rockefeller rather enjoys seeing
them earn their money.

Arizona only cast 15 per cent of
vote for joint statehood, so it is quite
doubtful if all the Rough Hidgers fol
lowed the president’s advice and it is
certain that the cow boys did not like
to be dictated to from Washington.
• • •
The New York Republicans will
not have much to be thankful for
this Thanksgiving for all their tick
et was defeated but Hughes and most
of the leaders are afraid he will turn
out to be a white elephant on their
hands.
• • •
The wheat raisers are beginning
to Inquire where the trust protecting
tariff helps them with the price
hovering around M cents a bushel in
the local markets, but the Republi
can standpaters have not vet dis
covered a satisfactory answer.
* * *
The State bank of New York City
doing business on the east side of
that city has just paid a dividend of
$900 a share on its $100,000 capital!
zatlon. This beats the record of any
national haul: and without the aid
of government deposits free of In
terest charges either.

The president has reprimanded
Chief Moore, of the weather bureau
for mixing up with the labor ques
tion. If President Roosevelt would
have tlie weather bureau investigat
ed he would find other matters in
such condition that would require
more than a reprimand to straighten
out.

The New Jersey legislature has
only three Republican majority and
the spoils, but Gov. Magoon is stand
ing pat and declares he will let well
enough alone for the present. Some
of these Cuban patriots will soon
have to go to work or take to the
woods if the standpat issue is per
sisted in.

Oklahoma and Indian Tenritory
entirely repudiated the federal offi
cials that have cursed them by elect
ing nearly every Democratic candi
date to the constitutional convention
This almost assures a solid Demo
cratic delegation to the next congress
of two United States senators and
five representatives.
