The Electric Power and Manufactur
ing Company.
The city council met in the council
chamber Wednesday night and among
other business granted a franchise to
the Electric Power and ManufaHur-
ing Company lo do business in Gaff
ney. The full text of the franchise is
as follows:
An ordinance granting to the Elec
trie Manufacturing and Power Com
pany a franchise to do business in the
city of Gaffney.
Section 1. That the Electric Mann
facturing an I Power Como.mv is
hereby granted t ie right to carry on
ihe business of an e ectrlc power
co.npan} within the city of iJaTnev.

to private individuals, corporations

power and light for manufacturing
and industrial purposes only (pro
vhp d. this shall not he construed to
mean that the right is granted to fur-
ilsh electric current for the purpose
of lighting in the city of Gaffney, or

is now furnished by the city of Gaff
ney, other than for manufacturing or
in lust rial purposes as above stated)
and to furnish lights to such maim
facturing companies as have and
maintain their own ■'gluing plants,

that no exclusive privilege is hereby
e-anted to the said Electric Manu
facturing and Power Company: and
provided further, that this shall not
lie construed as an exemption from
taxes or licenses which may lie law-
fu.ly imposed; and provided further,
that s;fid company shall not be per
milted, except by the consent of the
town council, to furnish bss than

son, firm or corporation.
Section 2. Said company is hereby
"ranted the right to use the stre ts

conducting electric currents by either

The public sales last Monday were 1
exceedingly light, only three pieces
of property being offered, one by Pro
bate Judge Webster and two by Clerk
of Court J. Eb. Jefferies, as follows:
The real estate in Gaffney belong
ing to the late Junius Hopper was
offered by Mr. Jefferies. The home
place, where Mrs. Hopper now re
sides, was bid in by her for $1,200.

The George R. Hughes property in
t.he Antioch section of Ch rokee
township, consisting of one hundred
and forty-seven acres, was purchased
by It. A. Westbrook, the consideration

Pastors’ Conference.
The pastors' conference of the
Broad River Association met in the
First Baptist church last Monday
morning with seven pastors present.
Among other tilings, they request
a!] of the pastors of th o several di
visions of tho association to meet
with the Piedmont church on the 5th
Saturday and Sabbath in December.
Dr. Simms, for the conference,
says:
"It is deserved that all the pastors
bo present in that meeting if tnissi

ingly.”

No Immigrants for Gaffney.
W. S. Hall. Esq., went to Charles
ton to try to engage some of the im
migrants who came over on the good
ship Wittekind by Immigration Com
missioner Matson’s efforts. Mr. Hall
returned to Gaffney Wednesday af
ternoon but he did not bring any im
migrants. He reports that all had
secured positions before he could
get to them. It was ids purpose to
bring two or three dozen women and
girls to Gaffney to do domestic ser
vice. He had been commissione 1 to

Prof. W. H. Hand, of the Cniversity
of South Carolina, will deliver a leet- |
ure in the court house Sunday after

Court Proceedings.
The jury in the case of Ellison Cur
tis vs. the Western Union Telegraph
Company rendered a verdict in favor
of the plaintiff for $50.00.
The jury in the Jones Gaston case
visited tiie mill dam on Bowen river
Monday. Tuesday morning testimo
ny was resumed. Wednesday morning
the case went to the jury. After de
liberating the entire day a verdict
for the defendant was brought in at
j eight, o'clock that, night.
Wednesday morning another jury
was drawn to trv the case of John
Dixon, administrator, vs. the Chero
kee Falls Manufacturing Company.
I After taking the testimony for the
plaintiff the case was non-suited on
motion of the plaintiff.
Yesterday the case of T. L.'Sellers
vs. the Western Union Telegraph
Company was taken up. Ties is a
| mental anguish case in w.licit the
plaintiff is sueing for $1,999 because
a message was not delivered
promptly.

Stabbed in the Foot.
A child of Mr. and Mrs Calvin
Bright, of lids county, while ulaying
had the mislortune to be stabbed in
j the foot by a playmate several wevks
| ago. At first it was thought the in-
I jury was so slight as not to require
treatment, and it was neglected, but
1 instead of healing the foot continued
| to grow worse. Dr. Darwin was
called In and he found that the hone
had become diseased, and although
the wound may eventually heal, the
indications are that it will take some
time and there is a possibility of the
child becoming a cripple for life.
