Work Win Soon Begin on Electric
Plant at Ninety Nine Islands.
(Charlotte Observer.)
Official announcement has been
made by the Southern Power Com
pany of its plans shortly to com
mence work on two fresh power sites,
one at Ninety-Nine Islands on the |
Broad river, six miles south of
Blacksburg, S. C., and the ot^er at
Rocky Creek, two miles below the |
Great Kails station, on the Catawba |
river. The development at the Nine
ty Nine Islands will produce 16,0001
while that at Rocky Creek will pro-j
dace :50,000 of electrical horse power. !
The total cost of these two develop- I
meats will approximate $11,000,000. 1
Both wi’l be completed by January
1st, 1908.
Mention was made a tew days ago
of the addition of $2,500,000 to the [
capital of the Southern Power Com
pany. That corporation now has the
largest capital of any having head
quarters in Charlotte. It owns the
water rights for 110 miles along the
Catawba river and controls the fol
low!’ " named power sites: At the
Catawba falls, near Rock Hill. S. C.;
at. Mountain Island, near Charlotte;
at the Lookout Shoals, near Newton;
at the Horseford Shoals, near Hick
ory; at Landsford, near Lancaster,
S. C.; at the Ninety-Nine Islands, near
Blacksburg. S. C.; at Great Falls
near Fort Lawn, S. C., and the Wa-
teree power, near Camden, S. C. The
150,000 of electrical horse-nower
whP’ will be generated at these dif
ferent points will be transmitted to
cover a territory 150 miles In length
and 100 miles in width. This ter
ritory stretches from Taylorsville,
on the north, to Columbia. S. C\. on
the south; and from Greenville. S.
C., on the west, to Darlington, S.
C.. on the east. Cotton mills and
manufacturing plants of all kinds dot
this section, to all of which this flow
er in time will be available.
The Catawba falls development
Rock Hill. S. was the first finish
ed. Its 10.000 of electrical horse
power was disposed of very shortlv
after it had been upon the market.
The big development at Great Fails,
10 miles below Fort Lawn, S. C., was
then begun. Its 40,000 of electrical
horse-power w ill be available early in
January. Already between 15,000
and 20,000 horse power, or about one-
half of this wHtiply has been sold.
Negotiations are pending for the re
mainder. The officials of the South
ern Power Company believe that the
entire output of the GreaP Falls sta
tion will be sold before a single
wheel turns. After the first of the
> ear. there will be little power avail
able from the present development^.
Realizing this, the officials of the
company met some time ago and
agreed to begin a development which
would m u et the demands of this ter
ritory for some time to come. They
determined to open up .as quickly as
possible, not one power station but
two, capable of producing between
45.000 and 50.00ft horse-power of
electrical energy. With that already
on the market, this wouUl give the
Southern Power Company the con
trol of approximately 100.000 by
January 1st, 1908.
When work was commenced on the
Great Falls station last year, a por
tion of the current generated there
was intended to be transmitted to
the mills about Gaffney, Blacksburg,
Spartanburg and Greenville. S. C.
The demand of the mills about Rock
Hill. S. C., Gastonia and Charlotte,
however, were so insistent that prac
tically all of the current was dis
posed of there. In order then to
satisfy the demands of the mills
about Spartanburg, Gaffney and
Greenville. S. C.. it was decided to
begin the development of the power
at the NinetyNine Islands, six miles
from Blacksburg and about 22 miles
from Spartanburg.
The plans and specifications for
the work there have already been
drawn. Some of the contracts for
the machinery will be let within 30
days. The building of the tenant
honse« tor the workers and the clear
ing away of the land will he begun at
once. The 16,000 of electrical horse
power which win be generated at that
plant will go to supply the needs of
the mills in the adjacent cities.
The power which is to he deVelop-
r ’ f >» the Catawba, two miles below
the Great Falls station house, and
"Mich will be Known as the Rocky
Creek power, will produce 30,000
horsepower. Transmission lines will
connect this station with the on.' just
above it

^ Dear Sir: Here’s honesty for you!
North Dakota has a pure paint
Prof. Ladd, the state chemist
l.vzes a certain paint labled
tains only lead and zinc
strictly pure.” and finds it
at all, a resinous oil, and benzine.
It is, however, full-measure and con
tains no water.
That’s like the man on trial for
killing his grandmother; proved that
he didn’t set fire to the house.
No lead, but zinc ami barytes,
resinous oil, and benzine—“strictly
pure lead and zinc paint!”
Pure paint is lead zinc-and oil; hut
that Isn’t all; there is such a thing
as proportion and make. The strong
est paint is Dovoe.
North Dakota Is doing a handsome
thing in holding these confidence-
people up to scorn. She gives their
names as well as their works.
Yours truly
