At Conway last Friday a white man named Commander Johnson was banned for the murder of the - Rev. Harmon Grainger. Johnson shot the minister from ambush last fall. A press dispatch contained the follow ing in regard to the murderer and his dime: “Commander Johnson's crime was the result of the strong antipathy be tween a criminal md vicious soul and that of a clean loving man who had been turning the light on the corrupt manner in which Johnson was living with the woman, Charlotte Simmons, who was convicted along with Johnson of the murder of the preacher, but whose neck the lury Saved by recommending her to mercy. The evidence was all circumstanthl. but there wag not a weal:- link in the chain that the solicitor forged about the two to show that Johnson, accom- nanied by the woman, crawled nn in the corner of the fence separating a st'iii of wood from a field in which the nreacher wis plowing, and empti ed a load into his bo-iv at c'os« -.ange as the victim was turning his horse to retranco his steps. The move ments of the two were traced tp the spot, the tell-tale gun was found, the wadding was matched and Johnson’s talk before and after the killing did the rest. “Johnson was a mere bov just out of his taens. His mother wrote a most pathetic letter recehtlv to the Governor in behalf of her son. in whose innocence of course she has the most beautiful confidence.. But in suite of his prominent connections, he wag promptly convictfil and every effort to get him a new trial or have his respited or his sentence commut ed has failed. The crime took place last fall and Johnson was first sen- t‘ need to lie hanged last March, but the energy and resourcefulness of his attorneys saved him for nearly a year They first went to the State Supreme Court on a picturesque showing of allenKl afterkliscovered evidence. The feature of thiv was an affidavit from one of the dead preach er's neighbors named Robert Barn hill. who swore that Grainger had the reputation in the community, among a certain class, of practicing witchcraft, 'the intimation being that a superstitious white man named Har ris had done the killing. Harris hav ing frequently complained that Grainger had cast a spell over his crops and having threatened on fhis pr. C oi'"‘ to end the preacher’s life. These allegations coupled with inti mations that the nreaeher was not all that he should be morally himself, aroused intense feeling among his friends and admirers, which found expression in denunciatory cards in the newspapers and ringing resolu tions in the district Baptist conven tion. of which Grainger had been a member. For the past several weeks t^o Governor has been receiving let ters almost daily from Horry county regarding the case. Members of the jury wrote that their names were be ing forged to a petition for commuta tion, and members of the Grainger family asserted that they were being threatened. The widow’ of the dead preacher sent in an affidavit that she had signed the petition for commuta tion only because she feared the John son people would carry out their threats to murder he” if she did not sign. This petition wa. never pre sented to the Governor here so there has been no prosecutions so far for forgery. This week both the State and Federal supreme courts were ap pealed to in behalf of Johnson, but in vain, and the judge and solicitor having refused to endorse a petition for cummutation, the Governor made up his mind not to interfere. So that Wednesday Johnson’s only hope lay in being rescued from the gallows by his relatives and friends. In view of the intense feeling over the case the sheriff appealed to the Governor to allow’ him the use of the local mili- tarv company, and this was placed at his disposal to guard the jail from yesterday afternoon until the execu tion today. Up to yesterday Johnson had been detained in the Marion jail for safekeeping.” SORES There is no surer evidence of a poisonous, polluted condition of the blood than that manifested by a sore that refuses to heal. Every symptom suggests pollution; the discharge, the red, angry flesh, the inflammation and discoloration of surrounding parts all show that the ulcer is kept open by a constant drainage through it, of impurities from the blood. Y the skin or insignificant hurt of any character will become a sore that refuses to heal, and remains for years, eating into the surrounding flesh, resist ing treatment and sometimes terminating in Cancer. It had been there so long and growing worse all the time, I became very much dis- couragi d and alarmed. At last I be gan the use of 8. S. 8. At first the ulcer seemed to get worse, but soon I noted an improvement and contin ued its use until it was entirely cured. MRS. W. A WRIGHT. Gary, Fla. the cause the vitality and pur ity of the blood is so weakened and polluted that it cannot properly nourish the system, and the sore or ulcer is kept up. Those most usually afflicted with chronic sores and ulcers are persons who have reached or passed middle life; the vitality of the blood and strength of the system have naturally begun to weaken and the poisons in the blood which perhaps have been inherited and lain dormant in the system for years cannot be as effectually held in check as in early life when the system was strong and vigorous. While the old or middle-aged are the usual sufferers, the young are not exempt if the blood becomes infected with the germs. Salves, plasters, lotions, etc., cannot cure old sores and ulcers because they do not reach the seat of the trouble. Such treatment keeps the place clean, relieves pain and perhap# reduces the inflammation, and in this way is beneficial, but can never permanently heal them. The only treatment that can do any permanent good is a competent blood purifier, one that goes to the very root of the trouble and re moves the cause, and for this purpose nothing has ever been found to equal S.
