The school house is so very small that it is necessary for the chapel to be used as a class room, which, of course, is very unsatisfactory and inconvenient. Dr. Williams, of Greenville lectur ed here Monday evening. His sub ject. was ’’A Ramble Through Pales tine.’’ He had a very appreciative audience and all those present en joyed the evening very much. Mrs. John Scott read a very interesting paper on Mrs. Davis’ lift*. One of Jonesville’s most highly re spected and esteemed veterans. John Gault, died at his home near here Saturday night. Mr. Gault had b on in declining health for several years, though his numerous friends did not realize that the end was so near. He leaves six children, all of whom are grown, to mourn his loss. The Misses Grenshaw who iiave had charge of the “Hotel Enterprise” have gone to live with their sister in Atlanta. No one has been elected to take their place yet. The host of friends they made while here regret to see them leave. Jonesviile will be well represent ed at the fair ibis year as quite a number of our people are going. GROUND TO DEATH UNDER CAR. Colored Woman Mangled Most Hor ribly. Columbia. Oct. 24.—Struck by an incoming Shandon car. Marv Martin, colored, was ground to death and .lull,a Rawlinson. colored.was serious- 1/ injured about 8 o’clock' last night. No one will ever know, perhaps, just why the two women did not get out of the way of the car. as it came down the MU to the “tin bridge,” on east Gervais street. The women were standing almost underneath the bridge, between Harden and Laurens street. They were looking ‘ up at a train crossing tbe railroad bridge overhead and for that reason did not see or notice the car coming down on them. The motorman did not see th ni in the shadow until bis car was almost upon them and he at once reversed bis car, but die car was run ning at, good speed and down bill and the women were struck before he could bring it to a standstill When the car was stopped the Mar- woman was under the car and it had to be raised to get her out. She was ground literally to pieces. Her body was crushed and tin* brains and blood were scattered over tbe tracks and ground for a distance of sev ual feet. The body was placed by the side of the tracks until Coroner Walk er arrived and had the remains taken to an undertaking establishment and prepar d for burial WILL MAKE HANDKERCHIEFS. New Enterprise to b e Operated in Greenwood. Greenwood, Oct 22.—Greenwood is to have a handkerchief factorv. It will be known as the Greenwood Handkerchief Manufacturing com pany. Mr. C. H. Foulsher is to be president and Mr. C. C. Hammond win be the secretary and treasurer. The capital stock of the company will be $5,000. all of which has al ready been subscribed. The machin ery has been ordered. The company win take advantage of the day cur rent. of electricity which is now be- in supplied here and is one of the pioneer small industries that are sure to spring up because of this day current. It will offer nice, clean and well paying employment to a number of young ladies. $300 in Currency Burned. Saluda. Oct. 23.—News of the de struction by fire on Friday night of the old William Stevens homestead near the town of Monetta, in this county, has just reached here. The property was owned ov Mr. E. Jones, of Batesburg. and was occupied by Mr. .1. W. Carver. The fire was dis covered about midnight and Mr. Car ver and family barely haj time to es cape from the burning building. Mr. Carver lost every piece of his house hold and kitchen furniture, family wearing apparel and family stores. He also lost $300 in currency, which he bad in his home. There was no insurance. The origin of the fire is unknown. Belton and Anderson Connected. Anderson. Oct. 23.—The interurjmn trolly line, which is being construct ed between Anderson .and Belton, will soon be completed and in a few weeks electric cars will be plying on a regular schedule between tiiese points. The distance from Anderson to Bel ton is a fraction over ten miles. The country between the two cities, through which the line passes is beau tiful and is increasing in value. The work on the interurban line commenced last March. Since that time a large number of laborers has been working hard and the line will be ready for cars between the first and fifteenth of December. The Anderson Traction company is behind the enterprise. In fact this company is building the line and will o crate it- The traction company is owned by local business men and not bv Northern capitalists as so many traction companies are owned. A. E. McCravy Found Dead. Columbia. Oct. 24.—A. E. McCravy. of Spartanburg, a visitor to the State fair, was found dead in bed at the Commercial Hotel here this morning His death was presumable due to heart trouble. Oct. 24.—Superintend ent Britton of' the Spartan Mi Is lias invented a device for keeping cotton straight on picker machines The device has been attached to a 1 the machines in the picker rooms at tbe Spartan Mills and they have been found to by thoroughly practicable and a great labor savor, for th • oper ator mav adjust the cotton by simply turning a small rod while seated at the machine, thus doing away with th< necessity of having to reach over the Pieker to adjust the cotton. The machine is protected by a patent granted by the patent office and it thought that the device will be generally used in all of the mills in this section. DAUGHTER OF C. W. STUMP Mrs. C. W. The government will make purchases within 30 days. Z. T. McKinney, superintendent of the Seneca cotton mills, denied that be made a statem-m to a Greenville reporter alleging that negroes were responsible for the fire at the former place. He declares that he related the circumstances of the fire but did not intimate that, colored people caused the conflagration. Two car loads reached Spencer this morning and promptly began work Three ad ditiona] carloads were carried to At lanta and other points South. The machinists were secured in Balti more, Philadelphia and New York and have been in readiness for ser vice for ten days. All of the men are being housed and boarded in the shop buildings, where comino’ious commissar/ departments have been fitted up. Another detachment of nearly one thousand machinists is expected to be distributed over the system within the next week. Oct. 22.—When the good ship Wittekind arrives in Char leston from Bremen, the immigrants will find a few friends at least to wel come them in America. A committee of the Baptist Young People’s Fnion of the Pendleton Street church, of this city, will be there with a thous and copies of the Bible to distribute. These Bibles have been ordered print ed in several languages, besides Eng lish. and each immigrant when he steps ashore will he presented with two volumes, one an English Bible, the other printed in his own tongue. Painter Fell Sixty Feet. Columbia, Oct. 22.—Charlie Parker, a one-armeu painter, fell sixty feet while at work on St. Peter’s Catholic church this afternoon, and is still un conscious. He will libely die. Parker was balancing himself on a box placed on the scaffolding, which he had been warned was unsteady. The support gave way and he fell to the ground.
