The communication of Perry Little,
himself a colored man. in another
column, is sensible. The white people
could do a great deal to illiminate the
black ’oafer If they would cut out the
‘pan toating” habit of their cooks.

The Maine voters must be consider
ably mixed about when the Republi-

Sneaker Cannon assure i them that
t he tariff will not be r- vised, while
Senator Beveridge told ttiem it would
be. As in the event of a Republican
majority in the next Congress Cannon
will be speaker and have the tariff

hand it will be better to take the
straight tin from him thal if the tariff
is revised it will be revised higher.

The Republicans won as Usual in
Vermont, but how much it cost the
Proctors is a matter o? speculation.
Reports from the State sav that
money is very plentiful and even the
farmers are satisfied. Votes have
been sold as high as $10 a head and
♦he determination of the Republican
machine to show independents that
it does not pay to meddle in Vermont
imlitlcs, mav have caused the nrice
for votes to advance. What c.imes
Republicanism will have to ?.rawer
for not only in Vermont but *-lese
where!

The suggestion of “Taxpayer." as
made in another co’umn of thL pa
per, appears to be a most reasonable
one. The ledger wants the citv to
grant a charter for the street railway
W© do not see the injustice of grant
ing a blanket charter that cover all
other privileges which the city may
have to offer, provided, of course,
proper restrictions are placed about
the charter. We have not seen this
application for a charter, but are
. Inclined to the belief that, there are
many wild rumors as to the demands
nade by the applicants.
