L. U. Campbell and Others Purchase
Flint Hilj Mine.
Mr. L. U. Campbell and other l>ar
ties h3ve purchased through Judge J.
FT Webster the Flint Hill gold mine,
on Broad river, near Smith’s F’ord,
and will begin operating the mine
some time between September 1 fith
and October 1st. It is the purpose of
the new owners of this mine to in
stall a smeiting plant made by a To
ledo. Ohio, firm, called the MacDon
ald hot air blast smelting system.
The object in using this system in
stead of the amalgamating system is
to reduce free milling and sulphide
ores of a low grade, of which there
is a great abundance in this county.
By installing this plant, the capacity
of which is one hundred and fifty tons
in twenty-four hours, is to give those
having sulphide and free milling
ores an opportunity to have their
ores practically tested in large quan
tities by competent parties, an« there
is hut little doubt that a large and
profitable commercial business can
he developed. This process is in use
i'> several large mining districts in
iIn; West and in Mexico, where la
bor expenses, fuel and water are
higher and scarcer than in this sec-
t ion.
The object of the company which
will take hold of this matter is to
own and operate the F'lint Hill mine
and to prove to the public that the
or‘s in North and South Carolina are
equal to the ores of the West and
Mexico in value. When this is ac
complished, which will take about
twelve months, those having mineral
lands containing gold, free or sul
phide ores can find investors or sell
their ores at this plant. Those having
ores of this character and who wish
to submit them in order to .ascertain
their value can do so by taking large
samples to Mr. L. C. Campbell, at
his residence in this city, or to Judge
J. E. Webster’s office, at the court
house.
Cherokee county has more varied
minerals within its boundaries than
any other county in South Carolina,
.and the only reason why we have not
been actively engaged in mining to a
greater extent, is because the ores
were not rich enough to pay under
the old systems, but under this new
system it is confidently expected that
the mines of this section can he prof
itably operated.

Limestone Music Faculty.
The musical faculty of Limestone
College this session win be one of
unusual strength, brilliancy and dis
tinction. FTvery one of the teachers
is a musician of the highest artistic
ability. The new director is Prof.
Harold A. Ixu-ing, a graduate of one
of the most famous music schools of
New England, a pupil of the celebrat
ed F'aelten Brothers, and has won
great distinction in his profession.
He is a brilliant concert pianist and
organist, and resigned a fine position
in the service of the United States as
supervisor of music, to accept the di
rectorship of Limestone College.
The new voice teacher is Miss Ed
na Van Vliet Higley, a graduate of
the New England Conservatory of
Music, who has a beautiful soprano
voice and is also an expert violinist.
She is a very experienced teacher,
and had had a distinguished career.
Miss Dew whose splendid abilities
as a musician are well known to Gaff
ney, will, of course, be with the col-
lego again this year.
The prospects of Limestone were
never so bright as they are today.
Its Tim e to "Get Busy.”
A corps of surveyors representing
the South and Western Railway Com
pany were in Gaffney Saturday run
ning a line for that company. A Led
ger representative made an effort to
get some information on the subject
but the only satisfaction received
was that the engineers were simply
running the line and that they did not
know whether or not Hie road would
come to Gaffney. It seems to us that
an opportunity is presenting itself at
our doors and that it would he a capi
tal piece of business for the Gaffney
Commercial Club to "get busy” on
tills matter.
