In Prohibition (7) Cherokee.
(Manning Star.)
Prohibition in Cherokee county,
the first of the counties to vote out
the dispensary under the Brice law,
seems to be somewhat disappointing
in its effects on law' and order,
judging from recent newspaper re
ports. For a while after the dispen
sary was voted out the anti-dispen
sary people kept sending out news
paper reports, stating that the people
were perfectly delighted with the
dry conditions, but it seems that the
change from the dispensary brand
to that of the blind tigers and the
moonshiners has not. after all. proved
to be a great improvement. One
urday night the mayo# of Gaffney,
the county seat, engaged in a street
light. Of course this fight may not;
have been due to the use of whiskey j
of any kind: the report of the fight
does no State but if there had been a
dispensary in this county, the cause
would have been attributed bv the
anti-dispensary organs to “fuss X.’’
And at Mabry's mill in the s.ime coun
ty on Saturday morning the county
campaign meeting was entirely brok
en up by ‘ a general fight, in which
about fifty knives were drawn, bats
and coats being promiscuously slash
ed. “No one was seriously hurt.’’
“There was no more speaking after
the fp’ht. though several of the coun
tv candidates were to have spoken.
The sheriff and other peace officers
were on the grounds, but w'ere unable,
it is said, to make any arrests, except
that Fowler was placed under ar
rest.”
This is too bad for a prohibition
coun’y. It would almost seem that
those people knew where the moun
tain stills w-ere located before they
voted out the dispensary, or is it that
dispensary whiskey is being brought
in from dispensary counties? At anv
rate, it is not likely that conditions in
Cherokee will be pointed to to illus
trate the beneficent effects of the
operation of the Brie- law.

“The Majestic Theatre opened its
season last night with ‘The Dandy

dians and vocalists composed entire
ly of colored performers. A large
audience was present and gave voci
ferous evidence of approval.
The entertainment consist of a reg
ular minstrel first part, succeeded by
an olio. In the former, four good
comedians participated, assisted by
chorus and orchestra. James Crosby
iu ‘I Don’t Know Where I’m Going,
but I’m on My *■ Way’ provoked the
strongest marks of hilarious apprecia
tion and he was ably assisted by
John Rucker, in ‘All Wise Chickens
Follow Me,’ and Charles Williams in
The Sun am Shining, Why Don’t You
Go.’ The most effective songs of a
sentimental nature were ‘I Wonder
How the Old Folks Are at Home,’ by
H. S. Wootson, and ‘Old Black Joe’
by L. E. W. Banks.
“The principal feature of the olio
was Mack Allen, a slack wire perform
er. This work challenged compari
son with the best, several of his tricks
having the merit of novelty. The
Toney Trio put up an interesting acro
batic number, John Rucker appeared
in some of his characteristic songs
and dances. Williams and Stevens
furnished some music and comedy
under the guise of a sketch, ‘A Part

contributed the usual colored walk

was bright, with plenty of broad com
